If you leave the yoghurt for 200 years a culture develops.

I'm going to go with: other countries cracking wise about yo mommas.

Toss another shrimp on the barby Shelia.

Wait, what Australia Day? Is this something like that "Canada Appreciation Day" you have in US?

The best part of Australia Day is spending the day at the beach with mates playing sport, grilling meat and listening to the top 100.

The worst part is the RAGING SUNBURN!

Australia day? Oh! That's what those drunken bogans were on about screaming "Aussie bride brah!" as they drove down my street in a hotrod. I like the end of it the most to be honest. It's really not my thing.

Australia Day (Jan 26) is the day Eastern Australia became the British Colony of New South Wales.

Wouldn't want your country to violate its probation. I enjoy the irony in an Australian court system. I always thought the country was kind of an Escape from New York/LA prison island. Ruled by the strongest and most violent.

But seriously, one my bestest mates in the whole world is a half Scot half Aussie. So I'll be raising a glass to her this evening.

The best thing? It only shows up once a year. Let's leave the rampant nationalism to the yanks eh mates? We don't need it.

[Edit]

Rossadti: the barbie is slang for bbq, and shiela is a slang term for woman. Unless you're setting women on fire, you can't cook a shrimp on one. Also, shrimp are different to prawns. The first is fishing bait, the 2nd is food.

Abedeus: Australia Day is the day Australia celebrates its formation, of sorts. Kinda like independance day in the states. It's an Australian holiday, not an american one.

I'm confused, Australia has nationalism but doesn't seem to have much of an established national identity. I mean what does it actually mean to be Australian?

(speaking as an outsider about Australia's relative youth)

It means sticking flags on the car, getting pissed and driving around screaming until you find someone who isn't white and punch them.
It's also the only time of year and he only country in the world where you can walk around shirtless with the flag painted on your chest, while using a real flag as a cape and fit in.

Quoted from my the last post I did... On the exact same topic

We are celebrating the anniversary of (in my opinion) one of the greatest nations on Earth
We are celebrating being able to survive on what should be the most inhospitable countries on the planet
We are celebrating everything Aussie, from drinking beer to swearing, to more drinking. Oh yeah and all that other stuff Aussie to...
Were celebrating 45 degree heat, -15 degree colds, raging fires and damaging storms! All occurring in the same day!
Were are celebrating who we are, where we are from, and what we stand for
Australia isn't just a place in the middle of a few oceans, we are celebrating the soil we stand on, the water we drink, the meat we eat, the children we teach, the wars we battled in the the people who died for our great nation!
Because I am
Because you are
Because we are Australian!

It must be shit to the indigenous peoples of Australia.
'Cause really, the 26th marked the day when the First Fleet arrived on the shores of Australia and fucked things over for them in the following years.
No wonder it's known as 'Invasion Day' to the Aboriginals. :(

No national identity? You must be kidding me right?

It's not something i can sum up in one post, but Australia has a rich, unique national mindset and a culture that is lost on foreigners who only see what they are given. And given we give your our shittest beer and logo's, it's understandable.

We have bad PR. In truth, we cant really be bothered trying to fix it. I could explain it, but you'd be better to come here and see for yourself.

That has to be the best trick played on naive tourists there has ever been...
Definately, followed closely by the hoop snakes, a trick Aussie troops played on the yanks during the vietnam war. On a slightly more personal note, but reasonably amusing, during ww2 my great-grandfather sold the americans genuine kangaroo feathers.
