I don't understand why so many people get all bent outta shape or pissed off about games made for fans. I think it's a great idea, this may make me sound like a fanboy, but I think devoted fans deserve it and it's a great way to make money, trusting that the "fan game" is any good anyway. I think, in general, games that are, or feel like they are, made for only fans of a series is okay and deserve less hatred.

Fan service is fine, so long as it doesn't interfere with the rest of the game. It's best done if non-fans can play through it and not even really notice it's there, while still being a gift to observant fans; it's worst when it's rammed into your face, grinding play to a halt while the game congratulates itself on its witty self-reference, or if it forces the game to take an absurd turn that it wouldn't have taken otherwise.

I don't mind fan service when it's done well, not at all. Indeed, I enjoy it quite a bit.

hmm.. I see your point, I think that there needs to be a good balance between the fan-service and the game's ability to stand alone in the series without relying too heavily on old themes

Normally when someone is talking about "fan service" they mean small soft-porn-ish sceens inserted to get ratings. >.>

In terns of games made to sell to fans of a series such as dragon ball, or CSI. that all depends on the game, normally people don't like the idea as most of the time very little work went into the game to make it fun knowing it would sell on name alone. Like most cartoon to game adaptations. I don't mind them as long as they are actually fun to play.

Because almost every single game coming out is either a sequel or derivative to the point of cloning another game.

Fan service is fine. I'm just struggling to find a game that isn't fan service these days.

I'm all for more boobs and panty shots in games. There's not enough of it if you ask me

I would say the key problem with fanservice (at least, the content kind, not the Xtreme Beach Volleyball kind), is that it has a tendency to lock out people who aren't fans, because they aren't getting the references.

Examples of good fan service:

Valve putting in the old HEV charger plate in Eli's scrap yard in HL2. It's a nod to fans of HL1, but won't confuse anyone new to the series.

Bungie's TRAXIS Industries building in Halo 3, tipping the hat to die-hard Marathon fans who read the terminals discussing rampancy. A new player won't be tripped up over it's presence, but the grognards still get a chuckle.
