Whats the deal with the Avatar movie?

So I've just watched Avatar. Yes I know I'm a couple of months too late, but anyways...

The movie definitely did not live up to all the expectations drawn up for it by ppl who've already seen it. Sure, it wasn't a 'bad' movie, but other than the CGI, which I admit was amazing, I really found the movie to be somwhat disappointing.

1) Why is it called Avatar? On the planet of Pandora, occupied by humanoid species called the Na'vi, whose home is now under threat by humans. Seems like a more fitting name would've been "Humans vs. Thundercats" (as all the Na'vi look like distant cousins of Panthera of the thundercats).
2) In the first 15 mins it becomes pretty obvious who the good and the bad humans are, seeing as all the Na'vi are good ... you can practically predict what happens next in the movie.
3) Am I the only one who thinks the the colonel (yes, the big bad guy) was in the right?
4) The movie creates a distinct impression that the humans and Thundercats are somewhat evenly matched ... that is until the fighting actually begins ... and the humans PWN the thundercats. This really got me thinking that if the humans were all that militarily superior to the Thundercats anyway, why in the world did the colonel employ Jake Sully to find weaknesses in the tribe? You don't need weaknesses to bomb em...
5) The movie has Sigourney Weaver in it ... as a scientist! I can't believe I watched a 2.5 hour movie with Sigourney Weaver in it and there wasn't a single scene of her machine-gunning someone or hammering someone with Mecha-armor (and this movie had guns and Mecha-armor too). To make matters worse, she dies .... and she doesn't even come back, as a thundercat or as a cyborg. (You'd think that after 4 Alien movies this was a given...)
6) The colonel offers Jake Sully legs.... LEGS dammit. Who doesn't want legs!!! I can't help but feel that between LEGS and joining team thundercats .... LEGS was the right choice.
7) "The Humans were sent back to their dying world..." Really? So Jake Sully chooses to live on a lush planet teaming with life, while condemning his fellow humans to die off with their world... I dunno about you but I think this looks as bad as genocide to me...
8) The humans lost 1 battle and its all over ?!?!? Why wasn't the colonel succeeded by a 2nd in command or something? Where are the nukes, dammit?

All in all, its not that I didn't like this movie, but frankly I hate it when a movies story has too many holes in it. I suppose most of you guys will disagree with me, but I'd like to know your thoughts on the topic anyway. Note: I still think Avatar is a good movie (much better than most of the stuff coming out these days) but I could have been better.

Spoiler Alert: If you haven't seen Avatar and you've read the above, be happy. You don't need to see the movie anymore ^_^

I haven't seen it yet, but I'd still like to just for the visuals. I don't think all that many went for the plot.

It's 'bout time someone said something about Avatar that wasn't, "ITS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER!"

I thought it was a decent movie, but there were a lot of plot holes. Some the size of Mars, some the size of the last drop of soda in the can that just won't come out. Like why the hell is Unobtanium so damn valuable?

Not seen it. Not keen too. I don't like the 3D, I get wicked uncanny valley from the blue things and I don't fancy an ecological sermon by something that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make.

When it shows on on Sky Movies I might sit through it (the regular sort, not the PPV).

1)You know how that thing under your name is called an 'avatar'? It's just a different way to view yourself. It's called 'Avatar' because they're put inside of 'Avatars' in the shape of the Navi.

2)Yea, the movie's predictable.

3)You're never the only one.

4)Because they wanted to go through the motions and get rid of the Navi peacefully so they wouldn't have to waste their ammo. It's always easier to do things the easy way.

5)... Ok?

6)He got legs and the 'thundercats' at the end, remember? Pay attention, man.

7)He decided he was part of the Navi community more than the human community. Don't worry though, the humans will undoubtedly come back later to blow up the rest of the kitties.

8)Because the Navi took over their one base and no one there played Starcraft enough to realize that you're supposed to expand...

Yea, it's a predictable movie with a bad, already-done-before story, but that's not the point. The entire movie is the CGI and the planet, nothing else. You don't watch it for the story, but for the kitties.

That said, I don't care much for the movie. It was Ok, but nothing special.

Well, its the special effects and the .... oh wait, no just the special effects.

I have really gotten tired of the comercials saying "THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!!!!"
I can think of many movies that are better than this one.

And the plot is just a remake of pocahontas.

SMURFS...IN...SPACE!!! AND THREE-DEEEEEEE!!

Yeah, James Cameron hasn't made a movie worth seeing since Terminator, but that doesn't stop people with no taste from spending megabucks to see his over-marketed drivel.

jsyk, it's called avatar because the "Thundercats" that are controlled by the humans are called Avatars by the humans.
Other than that minor nitpick though, i actually completely agree. but to that last point, the whole why isn't the Colonel succeeded by his 2nd in command? I'ma go with nobodies badass enough to properly succeed to colonel

OP: You took your brain in with you, theres the problem.
See I didn't see it until about a month or so after release so I'd heard varying opinions on it. So when I went to see it I just left my brain at home and absorbed the pretty colours and set pieces.TBH, I enjoyed it so much I went to see it again, and I plan on buying the Blu-ray next time I'm in town.

It's kinda funny cause one of my housemates saw it with me the 2nd time and came out with some similar things to what you have, and he got really uptight when my counterpoint to all of his arguments was: 'Dude. It's just a movie. It makes sense if you don't think about it, so don't think about it!'

That sums it up nicely, perhaps its not the best movie in the world but it should be at least fun to watch for a bit. Can't wait to see it once I can.

lol, I get what you're saying, but the thing is my brain isn't really detachable. And i reckon the day it gets switching off is the day I die. I know the movie was supposed to be a CGI paradise, but once upon a time (and far far away) so was Shrek. But Shrek had a great story-line. Directors need to understand that pretty colors are good but they're not everything

The problem is that you watched it expecting the best movie ever. Never expect more than "should be decent", you'll be much happier in general.

Also, your complaints are weird.

EDIT:

The mining operation was under the supervision of Administrator Selfridge (not Colonel Quaritch), Neytiri didn't get a sign from the Tree of Souls (should have said Eywa or Hometree), and Tsu'tey wasn't killed by "settlers" until after he and Jake resolved their differences to fight together.

Those things have bothered me about that picture since I first saw it.
