I just can't believe this. In the year 2016 with all the scientific evidence proving otherwise there are still people who believe the world is flat and the conspiracy theories they have to support this make no sense at all. I mean why did this start to gain momentum and why are people in this day and age still believing this? I just don't understand.

As with nearly all conspiracy theories it's mainly people wanting to be anti-establishment just cuz. Even if everyone would agree with them that the Earth is indeed flat, they'd find something else to stubbornly rebel against.

This flat Earth shit is just the latest fad.

I think its the echo chamber nature of social media. Because its not just flat earth, its every crackpot conspiracy theory. Flat earth, anti-vaxers, moon deniers, chemtrails. All generally existed prior to social media... but with facebook and twitter letting you create an echo chamber of "liked" and "followed" content more people are "out of the closet" with their crazy b.s. Because inside the echo chamber it seems like more people agree with you than those that actually do. Its why Trump and Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton supporters all seem to think that the majority is on "their" side. Its not the case, in actuality the electorate was as or more divided than it ever has been. But inside everyone's echo chamber... it seems like everyone agrees with you.

I've had a few conversations with Flat Earthers. They always stop talking once I bring up the logical point that every other large body in the heavens is round and that logically gravity would form any large body into a ball.

I'm convinced that most of these people are trolling. I remember a teacher in high school who told us about the Flat Earth Society. He also told us he was part of it. I always felt like he was a member of it ironically. Like he was saying "Can you believe this is a thing?"

Pft, they aren't trying. How do we know that the other large bodies aren't round but flat, that is, disc shaped?

Also, how do we know that gravity exists, and that we aren't accelerating upwards? I've actually seen the latter argued.

Parochial thinking and anti-intellectualism. Distrust of "mainstream science" (the scientific method) and "shills" or "apologists" (accredited experts, reputable organizations, authors of peer-reviewed papers). I don't think it's a recent development at all, but on the plus side, it is now more easily detectable.

For what it's worth, I doubt that very many of them actually believe it. They might think they do, but deep down they know that they'd be very surprised if the Earth were proven to actually be flat.

Because while people like to claim their skeptical, free thinkers who don't fall for the mainstream media's lies and bias they swallow everything that totesfortruthsciencythings.net throws up on their facebook newsfeed. Basically what Barbas said. People have become so convinced that authority=bad that they would rather believe any tripe that vaguely aligns with their world view specifically because it is not being pushed by anybody who's an authority on anything.

We're in the post-fact era. There's no need for critical thinking anymore, because no matter how utterly fucking stupid your beliefs are, you can always find an echo-chamber full of like-minded morons online to validate you.

Because their fundamental world view and belief was (at some point) tied to believing stuff in a very old book without any evidence to support it. And to admit that they are wrong about how the world actually works, is something they can't do. Their ego won't let them just admit "Wow, yeah I believed some stupid shit, but now I know better". So no, it's Science is Wrong, My Specific Version of God is Right, mentality.

You mean other than the fact that we see those distant bodies spin on an axis? No idea.

Oh, I saw a guy ask how people in Australia would not fall off of the Earth if it were round. I actually had to pause the video and facepalm. It was so painfully stupid.

Trump became president. I'm no longer surprised with people supporting silly things as anti-intellectualism.

I actually think its a joke that everyone is in on.

There is an organization called "Man Will Never Fly", or something along those lines. Its members believe that all flying is an elaborate hoax, and its members include former pilots!

Its been speculated that its all just a huge joke and they do it for a laugh, I'm inclined to agree. It's just too far fetched.

This flat Earth thing is probably the same deal.

Because people who think the earth is round hate poor people and want to bomb civilians.

Yeah, all Educated Adults will know that Earth is actually a cube and there are 4 simultaneous days going at the same time, because of that [http://wayback.archive.org/web/20160112193916/http://timecube.com/].

(original timecube.com website seems to be down, interestingly, but Wayback Machine is there to the rescue)
