whats with Ron Paul 2012?

This is for my curiosity more than anything.

There seems to be an overwhelming support for Ron Paul wherever I look on the internet and an equally damning opinion of Obama. Thing is, I've no idea what Ron Paul has done to gain this enormous following and what Obama has done to deserve scorn, and whenever I ask anyone they reel off a list of fact to support their stance without any references which I cant find anything about anywhere after extensive searching(this is on both sides).


Could somone help enlighten me? with sources?

He's a libertarian candidate who is overwhelmingly popular with college kids, very few of which are actually likely to vote. And that's about it -- he's taking advantage of the "republicans and democrats are all alike" misconception by saying "hey guys, I'm neither a republican nor a democrat. You want someone different? Try me."
