Nothing people know about, then.

Well, seeing as you excluded nearly my entire collection of graphic novels, by default it would be "Locke and Key" by Joe Hill(strom King).

either Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis, The Filth by Grant Morrison, or DMZ by Brian Wood

I love Hellblazer, Ghost Rider and The Punisher (Specifically the "MAX" adult series, though the new one is rather good)

Comic, Standalone: Batman The Long Halloween. This is the story that got me back into comics. A great murder mystery and a great use of many of the classic Batman characters.

Comics, In Continuity: To keep it simple, 3 from each company. Marvel: Daredevil, The Fantastic Four and Spiderman. DC: Secret Six, Green Lantern and Batman.

Manga: One Piece. An interesting world, good characters and (once it actually gets going, which does take a while) a good story. But it has been running for a loooong time...

I'd have to say either Serious House on Serious Earth or Blackest Night...there's a lot more stuff like Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Ultimo, VGCats, Jesus Christ: In the name of the Gun, String Theory, F@B0Y$, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, Awkward Zombie, I guess MSPaint Adventures could count...XKCD.
Seriously there are to many and to different webcomics to name one as good.

I'd have to say I like Ultimo the most out of the mangas I've read and....String Theory of the webcomics, both have a pretty good story line with beautiful artwork.

Ultimo was created and written by Stan Lee.

Suicide Squad, I don't think Suicide Squad has ever been collected into a TPB or a graphic novel but that shit was tight.

Kraven's Last Hunt is my story to come from Marvel.

Ditko's art on Dr Strange is my favorite Marvel imagery.

Grant Morrison's run on Doom Patrol is hilariously chaotic and absurd and I love it.

Ahh fuck it nothing before or since has been as good as Maus. Yeah Maus wins.

Watchmen

Sam & Max because Sam & Max is the best. Death note was pretty cool as well. I couldn't be less interested in superhero comics.

Well considering most of the comics I read are not Graphic Novels (Although most people like to call them that to sound mature), I can't answer...

PS: I read/used to read a lot of Marvel, which are comic serials and not graphic novels ;)

Watch-er, um, Bakuman!, a comic about making comics! I love it. I use to read a lot of X-Men as a kid then I moved onto Shonen Jump which I still read. I don't read much besides a few of the more popular "Graphic Novels" here and there. I don't have a bookstore, decent library, or comic shop near me...

I'm a real big fan of Y: The Last Man. The storytelling and world building that goes into a world without men is absolutely exceptional. The characters are equal parts likeable and understandable, for the most part.

And just when you're reaching the last issue thinking "Wow, that was definitely an excellent read," you reach the ending, which blows everything out of the water in its emotional depth and scale. Every time I reach the end of a movie or book and am disappointed by the cliches or sappiness I want to show the creators 'Y' and make them understand what it is to make a glorious ending.

Check it out, if you haven't.

My favorite of all time, and the first graphic novel series I stared collecting, is Garth Ennis' Preacher. Brilliantly written, some amazing characters, especially Cassidy (actually got angry with the twist in his arc halfway through the run, loved him so much), and the fact that all the fucked up shit Ennis' mind came up with always surprised me.

Honorable mentions go to anything by Geoff Johns (a bit of a Johns completeist) and Kevin Smith's Green Arrow run.

the Pushman and other stories by Yosihiro Tatsumi ( i guarentee you manga fans have never heard of it because its that damned mature)

its a compilation of 1969 works from Japenese alternative precursor Tatsumi, it really is more like poetry than a comic though.

Sewer was my favorite which explored the value of life and ethics of abortion through the practice of abadoning the corpses from home abortions in public sewers explored through the eyes of Tokyo sewer workers.
(very heavy)

also Robert Crumbs work

So you ask my opinion which is subjective, and then proceed to stipulate a load of rules and restrictions? That's not very helpful you know.

Anyway, a lot of good ones have been mentioned, such as several Batman books, Preacher and Hellblazer.
But in regards to my favourite series, it would either be Fables, or 100 Bullets.

And also, everyone does not like Scott Pilgrim. I didn't.

From the big two...I think I'll end up going with Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E., and Flash: Rebirth. Mostly since most of the others I do enjoy have been mentioned. I'll also put love out there for Thanos Quest, although I don't think it's ever been collected in Trade. Superman: Last Son is also a worthwhile read to me. Between it and Red Son, anyone who claims the Man of Steel is boring just because 'you can't hurt him!' needs to read those two. PHYSICAL wounds may mean nothing, but there's a difference between breaking his bones and breaking his spirit. The latter hurts alot more. Kingdom Come also explained this and was good in and of itself to boot.
