I was a big DBZ fan way back in the day, and I guess part of me can still still appreciate the over the top combat and cheesy dialog.

The last DBZ game I played was Budokai 3, and for some reason I just started thinking about DBZ again and am curious to see the majority favorite. I've come to realize that I'm never going to find perfection in a Dragon Ball Z game... and that's okay. My one problem with the DBZ games has always been the way the stories always revolve around the show. I understand why it does this, but the problem is that it goes against a rule I have about playing video games. I don't play video games based on TV shows and movies. I CAN play franchises and the like as long as the story doesn't mimic the material. KOTor is a good example: it carries the Star Wars license but the story is it's own (unless from an over-looked book or graphic novel which is still okay in my eyes)

(cough) anyways... what's your favorite game? what defines the Dragon Ball Z experience for you?

I still think Hyper Dimension is best. But that's probably because I couldn't stand any of the others. I still have an urge to go play a more recent one sometimes, but I don't give in to it.

So far, Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is my favorite. I somewhat captures the feel of the show with its fast-paced, complex combat system. That, and it has pretty much every Dragon Ball-related character one would want, and several no one would.

The one on the DS was pretty good.
It had alternate storylines. But it was a little too short, and reasonably easy for someone who plays a lot of fighting games myself.
Can't erase your save and start again either, (shame really, as I wanted to do everything again but force myself to use weak characters).

Budokai 2 is good too. :D

I'd have to say Budokai 3 is my favorite out of the lot. I owned, and somewhat enjoyed, the first of the Tenkaichi series of games; but I think the original Budokai series was a more solid fighter than the later iterations.

Budokai Tenkaichi 2, haven't played 3, Burst Limit or Raging Blast yet, but I do want RB pretty bad. I loved the demo.

Burst Limit is good fun, especially if you get it on the cheap (£8 bargain bin, hell yeah). The controls are simple, combos are easy, epileptics are having seizures, all the things that DBZ is about. The only thing that lets it down is a severe character deficiency (there's about 12), and a massively short story mode (took me 2 hours, ish).

But I'd have to say that Budokai 3 is my favourite of the ones I've played (Budokai 1, 2, 3 and Burst Limit).

I only found out about it today, but my friend had a translated NES rom of a game called Dragon Ball: Dragon Tricks. It might not count since it's a hack but it was very reminiscent of a Battletoads, but dragon ball themed. It was even complete with insane difficulty and awesome music. It seemed pretty fun to play too.

Budokai 3 for sure. They nailed the formula so perfectly for that one game, before releasing Budokai Tenkaichi, changing the formula, and unnailing it so much the entire thing came crashing to ground like some horrible family portrait...

...

Yeah sorry, I won't try to use similies ever again

It's funny. This is actually my shame. I really like some of these games, but I can't stand the show.

I really enjoyed BT3 for the huge character roster (something over 160 people counting transformations), complex 3D combat, and super-cinematic specials. I have Raging Blast as well (this is the next-gen entry in the Tenkaichi series, FYI). They've added cancels and signature moves, as well as way more customization options, but the melee combat seems to have been scaled back a bit. Overall though, I still really like it, plus it has flawless online play, which I think makes it the winner.

There was one on the GBA several years ago where you controlled Goku. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it though ><. It ended at the end of the Freiza saga.

Budokai3 is my favourite.

It's great to see how many times you can teleport to evade your opponent. I just decked out Kid Buu with items that reduced the energy consumed and went to school on people.
