Before anybody else takes it, I'm going to say Fatal Frame III!

Amnesia is definitely a close second though.

These games are so much fun.... And makes me want to go find my teddy bear.

Well for me the former is Silent Hill 2. But I don't find the game scary, I just know it's widely regarded as scary and I love it lots :3

As for the latter, Fatal Frame II. Not III, sorry OP! :)

And if anyone says Dead Space...

Being defenseless in a game is what gets me or poorly equipped. Games like L4D have no effect because the enemies are just like fighting humans with machine guns.

Also enemies appearing out of no where. I DO NOT LIKE THAT! I get so paranoid playing games like F.E.A.R. Enemies that walk into a dead end should be there, they shouldn't disappear :(

Stalker; when on the harder difficulty many of the opponents are terrifying, because your guns may as well be shooting peas; the soundtrack doesn't help, neither does the fact that several of the enemies are psychic and know where you are, even when you can't see them. I really hate controllers and poltergeists, especially controllers with that metallic ringing and that moan... *cringes at the thought* they are the only enemy in a horror game I've actually had nightmares about.

I was talking over Skype with my friends while playing Amnesia, and physically whimpering, begging them to let me stop.
It was the first level.

Amnesia, the Dark Descent takes that trophy.

Fuck me at the water part i actually started shouting "OMG OMG OMG!" over and over again, Very scary game.

The first penumbra game (Overture) takes second.

System Shock 2 is easily my favourite, it's just such a good game with amazing atmosphere and one of the most brilliant antagonist in gaming history, not to mention a damned good plot, great rpg styled mechanics, and some entertaining challenging gameplay.

Nothing else comes close in my mind...

Well that's not true. Although not necessarily horror the STALKER series is just absolute genius. Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat have got to be among my favourite games ever, full of some much damned brooding ambience and style I really don't think there's anything else out there that even comes close.

For me it was always Silent Hill (1), but other than that there's the rest of the series up to #4 that are still scary. I also loved the first Blair Witch game (Volume One: Rustin Parr; and yes it exists), had a perfect setting and almost caused a heart attack with the "first night" sequence.

And for some weird reason I was pretty freaked out by Eversion. Never would've thought I'd be scared by a 2D platformer.

Ninja gaiden on any mode higher than hard...
Demons souls
Megaman Zero 2

their enough to make any grown man whimper.

In all serious though Slient Hill 2 is pretty damn scary, Resident evil 4 didn't scare me at all, Bag head man scared me for about 3 seconds
1 second to pause the game
1 more to equip my shot gun
the 1 final second to introduce said shotgun to bagmans mouth he he he
Not scary at all, until I saw my first regenerator... They scare the hell out of me.

Also have to give a note to Metal Gear solid... that alert noise is the reason why i sleep with a cardboard box next to my bed.

Animal Crossing... Everything's so nice and fluffy. It creeps me out. I'm just waiting for the moment when I open a cellar door and I find out all the plushy teddy bears are actually cannibals. >.>

When I was younger, Friday the 13th on the NES used to freak me out... 8-bit graphics and sound can be unnerving when they're trying to be scary and you're playing the game all alone with no one around you. Really, it was the 3rd person house roaming parts when you got to a house that Jason was in... that feeling that "Son of a *****, he's right THERE... to my left or right."

A little later on, Splatterhouse 3 freaked me out a good bit, mostly from the digitized cut scenes of the real actors. Same deal, 16-bit graphics and sound are creepy as hell when they're trying to be scary... so it worked. Also the level 3 boss when you go to rescue your son... look it up. *shudders*

The stupidest "makes you jump out of your seat" moment I had with a game was in the Star Trek: The Next Generation game on Sega Genesis/SNES. The Red Alert would set itself off every time I was settling in to do something... didn't help it tended to be louder than any other sound effect in the game and I'd usually be playing when the house was totally silent. Would startle the shit outta me.

I can't say if any more modern games have scared me that much... it's usually all cheap sudden reaction scares which just get annoying. I love horror movies too much to be scared anymore, it certainly won't bother me in a game. When it came to something like Resident Evil, I was too aggravated with the controls to be freaked out by anything.

Best moment in Fatal Frame III: After you defeat a boss and wake up. The next scare in the game had me and my friends all screaming.

Looking back, it was hilarious.

And what do you guys think about the new game that Teh Escapist is making a big fuss about, what with the contest and all? (My badges explains if ya don't know.)

Looks scary though. :D

As others have said, Amnesia The Dark Descent. I remember sneaking past some of those weird brutes(the ones with the bladed arm) in a place like a sewer. Then I hear that freaky music, turn around and BAM. First time a game made me scream like a little girl.

Penumbra: Overture was scary at first, then I got the hang of swinging that pick axe around. Then I laughed at those puny dogs and spiders as I gave them the pimp slap of their lives. But that worm...that fucking worm...

I used to be scared of the zombie levels in TimeSplitters, and I also used to get creeped out at Dead Space, but the only games that still send the shits up me without fail are Condemned 2 and Project Zero.

Underhell. Because the game fucks with you.

Walk in the kitchen. See dead ghost of your wife walk by (making you shit yourself), suddenly the screen blacks out and you wake up in bed.

For a while it was Silent Hill 2 for me.

Then came along Amnesia: Dark Descent and that became the scariest game I've ever played. I don't know how many times I've ran into a closet or hid in a corner because I've knocked something over and thought it was a monster, or I thought I heard a monster.
