What's your favourite four consecutive albums by artist?

I've seen this topic discussed before but not in ages and maybe not here, so I'm curious. This should be good to see just how knowledgeable and ignorant some folks are, but play nice! Maybe even I or someone can pick up some tips of new music to listen to so I'm hoping to see it catch on and get some replies.

Subject line says it all: what's your favourite four consecutive albums by any one artist? Give us an answer (or several) and some kind of reasoning if you can be bothered. Myself, I have a few contenders but really struggle to narrow it down in some cases.

Metallica: Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, ..And Justice For All.
This shouldn't need much of any explanation to metal fans. Metallica came along, ripped off Megadeth and shook up the genre with their first four albums when they were still young, lean, hungry and passionate; before they became bloated overpaid stadium rockers. Yeah, RTL and MOP are so similar but they're both SO GOOD! The riffs, the solos, mmm-mm.

Opeth: Morningrise, My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park.
Pretty much Opeth's golden age. I'm a big fan of all their work. This has to include Still Life and Blackwater Park, but I think Morningrise and MYAH show the band's growth and progress better than including Deliverance and Damnation.

Enslaved: Argh! These guys are revolutionaries. Pick any four consecutive from: Below The Lights, Isa, Ruun, Vertebrae, Axioma Ethica Odini, Riitiir. Picking any four discounts two that I wouldn't wish discounted.
Enslaved have done some amazing things with Norwegian black metal. I'm working on listening to these albums again one after the other (although I also started with Monumension), which inspired the thread. Much like Opeth I think their growth and progress has been phenomenal, breaking into new territory so far removed from their early work, without losing touch of their roots. I'm going to break my own rule and refuse to cut that list of six down to four. I just can't do it, they're all so necessary.

Thoughts? Please let me know. Would be good to get some non-metal responses but I doubt there'll be much pop name-dropped!

Excellent choice for a topic, I love a good music thread. It seems we have quite similar tastes. I would also choose Opeth, although I find their first two albums a little harder to listen to because of the production. Like you I agree that all their work is terrific. And of course Metallica. I plan to check more Enslaved, because I discovered them with RITIIR, and found I like Axioma Ethica Odini too. I'm not a fan of straight up black metal though. I like their sound because they mix with more melodic forms of prog.

My choices:
Led Zeppelin is a classic choice. From I to IV.
Katatonia: Viva Emptiness, The Great Cold Distance, Night Is The New Day, Dead End Kings.
Porcupine Tree: In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear Of A Blank Planet, The Incident. Another one of my favourite bands, with a diverse and exciting discography. Post 2002 is my favourite period though, because Gavin Harrison.
Tool: Obviously the only albums they've done: Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days.
Mastodon: Remission, Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack The Skye.

Your choices highlight some obvious ones I missed, but then I didn't want to start naming too many! Total agreement on Led Zeppelin, Tool and Mastodon. Probably should've also thought Queen (A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, News of the World and Jazz). I've got Deadwing and FOABP by Porcupine Tree and was wondering about more of their stuff, so you've given me a couple of albums to track down - thanks.

If you like the two most recent Enslaved albums then you should have no problem liking Isa and Ruun. Earlier work, more focussed on the black metal side of things, but I love them both. Vertebrae I think can be more controversial as they veered so far from metal with it. I still love the feel of it though - such a cold, bleak album. Below the Lights is great for seeing what they were doing when they were a black metal band experimenting with the proggy side, before nailing it with later albums. It's an absolutely blistering piece of work in a similar way to Mastodon's Remission being a wonderfully unbridled rage[footnote]The opening track, As Fire Swept Clean The Earth, is linked from YouTube here and gives you a good indication of what you're in for. Blast beats, cold slashing guitars and one of the most mournful melodies I've heard.[/footnote]. Monumension is similar to what they were trying with Below The Lights, but a few steps earlier in the journey. You may have guessed I dig these albums a bit! I've not tried their work pre-Monumension as yet, as like you I wouldn't really call myself a black metal fan.

Feeder. Best British band of the 90s and throughout the last decade, they have eight(Nine if you count B-Side double album) consecutive albums that are truly awesome.

Polythene(1997)
It's like Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana had a baby which then had a child with the lovechild of Pixies and Husker Du. I'm not very good at saying why something's good. Such a distinct sound on this album that combined everything that was great from the 90s.

Yesterday Went Too Soon(1999)
My favourite Feeder album, it built on the sound that was established on Polythene and the lyrics improved massively. It also showed glimpses of what post-2001 Feeder turned out to be.

Echo Park(2001)
Echo Park has more of a 'pop'(Although iTunes tells me the CD is Metal) feel to it but it's still cracking nonetheless, softer than previous albums but it still had hard rocking numbers such as "Under The Weather" and "Choke"

Comfort In Sound(2002)
The transitioning point between 90s Feeder and post-2001 Feeder, it's an album that contains songs about how the band felt around the drummers suicide in 2002(thats what wiki says, I thought it was 2001 though). The songs are more emotional and softer than the other albums.

Kasabian have four consecutive albums that are awesome but they only have four albums.

Edit: There doesn't seem to be much discussion in this thread so far. I'd chip in but I haven't heard of half these artists.

A really great series of albums that get overlooked by the general public because everyone just remembers them for car songs
and Pet Sounds.

The Bronx, The Bronx II, The Bronx III and The Bronx IV are all awesome and actually get better and better. Pretty much the perfect example of evolving your sound without losing your identity, which can be pretty hard for punk bands. There's no one filler song on any of their albums.

Parkway Drive: Killing With A Smile, Horizons, Deep Blue and Atlas. The first two albums are pretty solid metalcore albums, definitely with a unique sound but they both sound fairly similar to eachother. I think Deep Blue's probably the best, has some deeper concepts in it and feels a bit more grown up. Atlas is a bit bolder, tries to incorporate different instruments a bit more, more topical (largely about environmental issues and things), but to me it feels like it lacks some of the great twin guitar lines from Deep Blue and I don't really think the songs are quite as good. Tails off a bit towards the end.

All eight (if you include the Burn The Priest album) of Lamb of God's albums are pretty awesome, they can bit a bit samey but each album has a different feel. Wrath may be a touch overproduced, and the earlier albums lack the real standout songs that the later ones like Sacrament and Resolution do, but they're still great. I personally think the latest, Resolution is probably the strongest all-round album. It retains the better production values of Wrath but tones it down a bit, brings back some of the intensity of the earlier albums and has a bit less filler on it. That and Randy's vocals on it sound perfect, he's improved his technique and they're really well produced so they're nigh on perfect screams.

Huh... I don't know if there are many bands where I actually enjoy four of their albums consecutively... a lot of the bands I love probably don't even have four albums... unless we can include EPs?

Because then at least I've got Between the Buried and Me: Colors; The Great Misdirect; The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues; The Parallax II: Future Sequence. Favorite is Colors, but I don't like much of their work before that album was released.

Ooh, and Helios: Eingya; Ayres; Caesura; Unleft. Favorite is Caesura, but Eingya comes in a very close second because it has individual tracks that I like a lot more.

Blink-182: Take Off Your Pants and Jacket; Blink-182; Neighborhoods; Dogs Eating Dogs. It's a hard choice whether to include Enema of the State or not, but I like their Dogs Eating Dogs EP enough to bump it I think, while their eponymous album is my favorite and contains possibly my favorite music track of all time in the song "Asthenia".

Norma Jean: Oh God, The Aftermath; Redeemer; The Anti-Mother; Meridional. I didn't particularly like The Anti-Mother when I first heard it, but it's grown on me since then. Meridional is probably my favorite, but it's neck-and-neck with Redeemer.

Bring Me The Horizon: Count Your Blessings; Suicide Season; There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret; Sempiternal. This is a trickier one for me to pick a favorite from, because there are a few tracks on each album that I really like, mixed in with a bunch of tracks I don't care for or don't even listen to. In terms of which I find the most enjoyable to listen to completely, it would probably be Sempiternal.

Oh, Sleeper: When I Am God; Son of the Morning; Children of Fire; The Titan. This one is, not unlike Blink-182 and BTBAM, in on a technicality, because The Titan is only an EP. It's another one that's hard to pick, but I'd probably have to go with Son of the Morning.

Goldfrapp:
From Felt Mountain over Black Cherry over Supernature to Seventh Tree.
Although my tastes are not met with Seventh Tree it is amazing how much different styles you can put into four albums and change your music so much with every new album.

Moonspell:
From Wolfheart over Irreligious over Sin/Pecado to The Butterfly Effect.
Again I was always amazed how much experimental stuff for a metal band you can try and how much a sound can change with every album.
As with Goldfrapp the only really persistent thing on every album is the singer/voice.



I guess there is more like that in my personal collection like the music of Covenant for example but the above stuff comes right to my mind.

Edge of Sanity is my choice for this, since some of the more obvious bands have been plucked already.

Unorthodox, The Spectral Sorrows, Purgatory Afterglow and Crimson may well be the best four consecutive extreme metal albums ever, and I've heard at least 15 of them! Srsly though, EoS were bloody fantastic.

King Diamond released Them and it's sequel, Conspiracy. Following the story of King and the Ghosts, they released The Eye, a good old story about which burnings and evil priests. Finally, they had Spider's Lullabye, and while I'm not a fan of the beginning, when they actually do the story of Harry, an arachnophobic man undergoing flooding treatment which ends badly, it ends up with the single greatest, most hair raising lyric I've ever heard.
