So this gorgeous girl / guy just walked in (By "in", I'm most likely referring to a stable environment of which you can instigate conversation, and no, not your home because that would instead be invasive, unless of course you were having a party etc), how do you go about instigating conversation with the person and what do you usually do to find success depending on what you were looking for in the first place, be it a relationship or fling.

I wait for her to ask something from me, then I answer the question in a single sentence and wait quietly for the next question. I don't go and chat with people I don't know. They might find it annoying, and I try to avoid being annoying.

Is this tactic successful? Yes, I get everything I want. If the other person keeps up the conversation, then we both probably had an interesting enough time. If not, well, nothing was lost, so no problems there.

Be as engaging as you could, humor works best for short term conversations.
Usually people in the street don't want to have a fling, so I wouldn't bother with setting up such a goal with a girl I meet in normal places.

My flirt tactic is....not to. I cant flirt at all, I find it quite pointless most times.

It's good to see that I'm the only one here who doesn't flirt.

I'm too shy to actually hit on girls I like and even if I were to try I'd probably suck at it.

I do the be myself thing, if I'm interested in someone I introduce myself, talk and if still interested ask to see them again.

A witty situational phrase or joke to melt the ice. No matter the approach that's sure to get things flowing at the very least.

*grabs popcorn and sits back to enjoy all the sad "I don't flirt" stories*

And eagerly awaiting the first mentions of alpha males and links to the ladder theory. This should be fun!

I learned to flirt from the King of Hollywood himself....Clark Gable....show some interest while keeping the conversation light. Keeps her interested.

well, I usually don't flirt (at least, not intentionally), but my friends tell me that my conversations with women sound like flirting often. I really just talk to people, try to gauge her personality, and be humorous and friendly. Of course, that's how I talk to most everyone I meet for the first time.

I scream the word "intercourse" and hope that somebody takes the hint.
My computer scrolled to the bottom of the thread and this was the first thing I saw. I nearly had sweet tea coming out of my nose. Ah, that made my day, thank you.

OT: I have no flirting ability whatsoever. I'm very socially awkward, and unless they find that cute by some strange chance, then I'm doomed.

More honestly and less douchebaggy - I sit silently in a corner looking awkward untill someone approaches in which case Ill most likely drive them off with my anti-social behaviour.

I don't have a flirt "tactic" as such.

I just talk to a lass and see how the conversation goes. I'm fortunate that I have a "gift of the gab".

Making a lass laugh is a good way to start.

Failing that, cheesy chat up lines.

"So... er, um, ah, err, uh, uhm... whelp, I've got to go"

And if that fails, well, I try to be funny. It works quite well, that humour business. That, or I go really in depth talking about something that interests me. Trust me, everybody likes to listen to people articulate what they like. At least, most of the people I know do. I once talked a lot about the Smurfs and had everyone enthralled. Not that I like that miserable, insufferable franchise, I just somehow know a lot about it.
