What's your opinion on Thor

I just watched it over the weekend, and I have to say that I'm not impressed.

I liked how it started out, I liked Asgard, I liked the idea of the Frost Giants...but....the movie seemed to flatline from there.

I'm not into comic books, so maybe I missed something? At the end of the movie I felt like I had just watched 2 hours of setup for a punchline that never came.

In my opinion, the characters weren't well developed, the story felt rushed and flat, and the romance felt forced. At no time did I ever feel that Thor was in any real danger. There was no climax at all. And then it just kinda ended.

Loki, as the villain, was weak in my opinion. He didn't seem menacing at all. He looked like a dork, like the kid that gets picked last for a pick up game of basketball in gym class. And the "fight" with the metal giant thing? Was that even a fight? I mean, huh?

They could've done way better. I mean, Green Lantern was more coherent than this and that's saying something.

I quite enjoyed it.

Loki is not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy (had to get a Monty Python quote in somewhere).

Although they could have picked a better actor to portray him. He did make a half decent bad guy but not what i'd call the nemesis of Thor like they portrayed him.

He was the kind of bad guy who'd probably turn a picture upside down and consider himself an evil genius.

I like it but I get what you're saying.

Yeah the parts Asgard were cool but the human was dull which most of it take place in. That however is suppose to happen well in the comic anyway since Thor did get banish to Earth because of his arrogant and he had to learn about humanity.

I like Loki in the film although he was portray as a sympathy villain as oppose as a sinister prankster/ evil in the comic.

I did felt there were some plotholes in the film-
Example how did the warrior three with Sif and the Destroyer get from the portal gate to the town so quickly! I mean wasn't it a few miles away between the two locations?

Since i decided to watch it as a movie adaptation of a Marvel comic rather than a depiction of norse mythology i managed to sorta enjoy it.

It was nothing major and a pretty easily forgettable movie, but at the time of watching it i had a good time and i guess that counts for something.

I fully agree that the Loki character wasn't like he should have been. It's really not the idea i had of him after the mythology tales i know. So, yeah... that's why i decided to watch it as something Marvel-produced rather than nordic-produced.

That's what Loki is supposed to be - a trickster. He's not a big warrior, he's a clever little devious guy. Thor is brawn, Loki is brain.

I enjoyed it while I was watching it, but I don't remember much of it now. It was a shallow little romp that treated its source material with respect and told a decent little story. As for recent superhero movies, I found X-Men: First Class to be *far* superior. I haven't seen Captain America yet, though, and I hear it's very good.

I was kind of hoping this thread would be about me. It would seem my ego is alive, well, and over inflated.

OT: You're not missing anything. It was actually pretty damn true to the comics. Magic is one and the same, absurd things happen, dude looks like a chippendale's dancer saves the day. Loki is more about creating a vast army of henchmen, other super villains (see: absorbing man), or some elaborate Machiavellian scheme, instead of getting into an actual fight.

I agree that the romance was 'forced' and seemed kind of dumb.

I liked it, but i feel that the Earth parts were less interesting than the Asgard parts. It could be Marvel´s Lord of the Rings, but instead it´s just an entertaining movie. Not a bad thing, sure...but Marvel needs (from a creative point of view, not a finantial one, since Thor was successful) to make a sequel that is less formulaic to have something really special in their hands.

I liked it, it was well made big dumb fun.

Its a kids film that grown ups can enjoy as well- if you're looking for something deeper you're looking in the wrong place (and arguably the wrong genre).

The more I read the OP the more it seems like your expectations were way off- its an action film and doesnt pretend ot be anything else- its not the Dark Knight or X Men 1st class who try and cram in some poorly thought out philosophical nonsense, Thor (and to be honest Iron Man and Captain America) are just entertainment- nothing more nothing less.

I wasn't expecting much, and my low expectations were pretty much met head on. I didn't get into the characters or world at all, and I'm a pretty big fan of Norse myth so I generally knew what I was getting character wise. They just didn't pop to me. Above all else, though, I just found the movie to feel really cheap. The effects were poor, the costumes were horrendous, the visual design was second rate, as was the script.

I think it will be interesting to see how the character of Thor fits into the Avengers movie, and Hemsworth was a decent Thor, but I doubt I'll waste any time/money on the inevitable Thor 2.

I found it was a good bit of fun, with some pretty damn good CGI to boot.
[small]And Natalie Portman, which is always good.[/small]
Now to wait for Captain America to come out on DVD, and then...

I respectfully disagree, I heartily enjoyed it. It wasn't a perfect film by any measure but it was an fun romp with action and humour. My favourite aspect was that it wasn't your standard origin movie, he had all his power and might from the get go. You didn't watch a human become a super-being, you saw a super-being become more human.

Also I thought asgard was impressive and there was pretty stellar performances from all involved, but special mention of course to Anthony Hopkins and Idris Elba who managed to make a minor role shine despite the (silly) controversy surrounding it.

Edit: Evidently I liked it enough to waste my 4000th post on it.

I think they walked. It's not that far for a hearty Asgardian, we only saw them when they turned up and when the Destroyer started attacking the town. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents may have been too scattered to put out a warning (all of their cars seemed to be destroyed).

It was ok, but there should have been more Thor on earth. It felt a little like it was just building up to something (which it is, The Avengers), but not much happened really. That said, I really liked the way it looked in Asgaard, and it's a good base for future films. I need to see Captain America and then I'm ready for The Avengers!

I quite liked it, or at least it was better than I thought it was going to be. Never was a fan of Thor but I think taking away the winged helm and giving him a beard makes him better.

Goddamn I hate that wingéd hat. It's so bloody stupid.
