What's your strategy in Risk?

I'm sure that Escapians (or whatever we're called) play Risk and, having just finished a game, I'm wondering how others play out their world conquest. That is, what territorries do you deem most important, what continents must you control? Are you a ruthless backstabber or do you avoid alliances? Are you passive, allowing others to have their petty squabbles, while waiting for a wounded victor (or victim) to emerge so you can crush him/her or do you play agressive, going out to seize what's yours right from the get-go?

My personal strategy is to starve other players. The territories I always take are Iceland & Greenland. I try to get Indonesia next, allowing me to essentially control Australia. If still available I take North Africa & Kamchatka (and maybe Brazil). Nothing else strikes me as important to my strategy but I prefer easy to defend island territories such as Japan and Madagascar. I view Greenland & Iceland as important because it denies Europe & NA their all-important troop bonus and effectively isolates them, preventing them from making sucessful caputures and gaining cards (stalemates are SO exciting). Meanwhile, I use my decent draft that I get from controlling Australia to reinforce my African territories before pushing out of them to take control of the whole continent. Then I wait on my now even better draft a little while longer before pushing out of Africa to take Europe. At that point I control the East well enough to take Asia and therein essentially assure victory.

Also, this is the forum to post about board games, right? It is a game after all, so I don't think it should go in the Off-Topic forum.

I just hope that the dice and cards land in my favour then I just go on the offensive and formulate tactics as I go I never have a overall strategy before I play except maybe set up choke points if possible on important territories.

Last time I played was a couple of years ago and I got stupidly lucky got all my territories bar one on setup then conquered the one I needed to win on the first turn of the game one dice roll the game was over ahhhhhh sweet victory.

Take Australia and dig in. I'm usually playing against two or more people at once, and they tend to go after each other, while I'm sitting in Australia, fortifying my defenses and slowly expanding. Works perfectly as long as I get lucky in the early rounds with Australia territories.
