What's Your View On Machinima?

As an SSBB Machinima VA, I'm always interested to know in what the opinions of those outside of the Machinimation community are on Machinima in general. Do you think it's good or bad? A great idea or unoriginal? Do you think it's nice that gamers are getting contracts and getting paid (by Machinima.com, among other things like RvB) for these videos, or horrible that they're making money off of something created by somebody else? Tell me your views.

It can be really good and really bad, just like any other medium.

i like machinima and i find it completely fair that there making money off it because they actually spend alot of hard work and money to make them

Good and bad... in some ways, they should probably pay some sort of royalties or licence fees if they are making money off of the game. But then, photoshop is a one off payment that you then go on to use for making design/print work.

Things such as RvB, and very well done Machinima are awesome, but sometimes there are just crappy things that really shouldnt be done, but that sums up 80% of youtube these days.

Well, i thought bungie allowed RvB to do their stuff and even included it in their advertising vids etc.

I think its fine as long as the creator of the game consents it.

They wouldnt make as much money as the developers anyways.

Since I voice in Brawl machinima, I can't help but ask, anybody watch that, or just stuff made in FPS games?
Also, people are doing stuff with Gears of War 2 that's pretty good.
And personally, I love the utilization of WoW.

I love machinima, or at least when it's done right. series like RvB, Arby N the Chief, and others are great because the directors actually know what they're doing.
and I've never watched a non-FPS machinima series so far, but maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

Using a game engine to make an original movie is a great idea. It's just another cheap tool available to artists. I only think it's crap when people record dialogue over preexisting cut-scenes or game play footage. Then you're not doing anything but stamping someone else's hard work.

But some engines would certainly lend themselves to people who want to tell stories but can't afford a huge production. The Source engine comes to mind. As does Havok and whatever else Volition used for Saint's Row II. Just think of a 20 minute gangster movie using their character creator and motion captures. Wizard, man.

Well, i thought bungie allowed RvB to do their stuff and even included it in their advertising vids etc.

Not just that, they added in the 'Aim down and look straight forward' glitch to Halo 2 because of the popularity of Machinima videos made with the first Halo, Red versus Blue included.

When it's done good (Red vs. Blue, Anything by ICTON), it's great, when it's not (most other Gmod videos), it's completely AWFUL

Yeah because that wont get confused with real life movies based on games. Or shit like Final Fantasy Advent Children or hell, even in game FMV's. "Video Game Movies" is a stupid term.

Most people who have never heard the word spoken don't know how to say it, so that a problem.
