So I just started a new job, and have my own desk and computer and everything, although I've been given the filthiest keyboard I've ever seen (it's properly minging). I'm still pretty much in training, so I'm not doing much, and I was wondering, what's work like for the rest of you, love/hate, inside/outside tough/boring etc.

Okay, so my work this summer was at a golf course, working the back shop.

On normal days, that meant making sure the driving range had balls, getting bags for the members and loading them on a power/pull cart, washing the clubs after the round, getting out power carts so they're ready, and so on. Most of the work was outside.

I liked it. Tournament days (setting up, taking down) were not at all fun, mostly because they're the club's money days, and therefore everyone (management and so on) is stressed and you're the one they take it out on.

But I'll be going back next summer, so it couldn't have been that bad.

You've been poster #1 on every thread in OT today. Do you have the precogs from Minority Report in your basement or something? Perks of being a mod?

You were around, like, a year and a half ago, right?

That was my "thing."

Apparently I'm still pretty good at it.

I was a pretty infrequent poster back then if I remember correctly.

I tend to do this with News posts a lot. If it's controversial.... QUOTE TRAIN INCOMING!

Basically I do the ***** work that no-one else wants to do because I am also new :p it can get quite boring and frustrating as a lot of the time how much work we have is totally in control of the software developers. So mostly I'll just be writing tests & documentation, sometimes running them, and occasionally telling everyone that something's broken through our quality management system (possibly my favourite part).

I work IT in a foundry/machine shop. I am unfortunately the entirety of it. Not to one up your dirty keyboard but keyboards get lost in the metal and black sand dust around here a lot.
Summer = 130ish in the foundry
Winter = same temp as outside in the Shipping Docs
Always = dirty as hell and usually hotter

If you get a chance, dont work in a foundry regardless of what your doing....

I work in a retail shop, while it is part of a brand but it doesn't exactly on par with the bigger chain shops like Asda (I mean the store sell cheap and 2nd brand stuff).
It has its high and low. I'm perfectly fine when it's delivery day when the new stock arrived as it give me plenty of work while working on Sunday can be quite boring (restock the products all day).
Overall though I am content as my workplace as at least I'm out and about than being stuck at home being umeployed (it's my first job).

I wake up hours before the ass-crack of dawn, crawl up highway 101 dropping off goods at various restaurants and retail locations, and get to see a beautiful sunrise and sights (I.E. hot jogging womens) everyday. Love my work.

~Plus, it's the fastest flowing workkday I ever had. All the others used to drag on and I'd loathe even showing up to them. At this one the day is half over before I even know it.

I started working in a shipping warehouse about a month ago, and I basically stand at a conveyor belt all day sorting boxes based on destination. It can get boring as all hell, but the hours are good, and the pay isn't bad either.

I just got hired permanently on Monday at US bank after eleven months of being a temp (High Five! Anyone...anyone at all? Fine...I'll high five myself).

I review FHA cases to make sure that everything is where it should be (permits, borrower signatures, insurance, U/W stuff, etc). It's not the most exciting job in the world but the pay is decent and I love working at this office. We are currently playing an office-wide game of battleship and will be soon having our costume contest! Much funner then my last temp job at the bank-that-shall-not-be-named.

I'm inside at a big counter where I watch movies and youtube videos, sometimes with my co-workers, for 3-5 hours. I like my job.

And I live about a block from it.

Work as an operator at a nuclear power plant. Just run around all day, starting and stopping pumps, opening valves, etc. Everything is done by procedure, so you don't really have to think a whole lot, unless the procedure is complicated. ( I kid you not, there is a written procedure for flipping a light switch. a LIGHT SWITCH!!) The schedule is odd because you seem to swap between working days and nights every other week, but it also makes it so you can have 7 days off. When we refuel the reactor, we go to working 12 hr days, 6 days a week. That can suck tons after awhile.

I work in the computer lab at my University as a lab consultant. I fix computer problems, unjam printers, clean the desks and monitors, help the technologically illiterate use lab equipment. But mostly I just sit at a computer and do whatever I want to kill time until there's a problem that requires my attention.

I'm on shift right now as I type this. I have Minecraft open in my other tab. And I'm being paid for this.

I went from working in the day in a grocery store to working at night in the same grocery store . I do the same job i used to do , minus tending to clients , and i'm paid 3 dollars more an hour . And all i had to do was ask . I like the graveyard shift , so quiet . Only downside is my girlfriend is as quiet as an elephant , so when i'm home it's hard to sleep . She keeps waking me up for the dumbest reasons.

Long, tedious at times, rewarding. Indie Developer. Well Indie start-up, we all can't make a extreme lego and have money coming in through the air vents.

I work as a part tester in an engineering lab. Like Chell in portal, though not quite as fun (or deadly). I essentially poke things with a metaphorical stick to see if they'll break, then I write down the results and the numerical data... then spend the next few days (or weeks depending on how long the testing took) filling out the paperwork and doing basic calculations.

Yah! Thank you! ...I should probably remove that part because I have a feeling that the ever so nice Escapist community will flood my inbox if I'm begging for attention :)

Anyway, about your job. Now, you say it's like Chell but I think we're all thinking the same thing: Is there cake? (sorry, it had to be done)

...No, but one time one of the other lab technicians brought in cinamon rolls. It was the best tasting lie I've ever had.

EDIT: We also had ice cream cake a few times, but that was for the engineers :/
