Because I just found out that in Horde Mode the Class Skills are locked behind the Loot Crates, which can only be gotten with the slowly acquired Credits or bought with real money.

And these aren't minor skills either - they're skills like Take 25-100% less damage while in cover and Your automatic weapons deal 25-100% more damage. So your progress past Easy/Normal in Horde (AKA any difficulty you couldn't already sleep through) is effectively locked behind RNG loot crates.

Too bad MS doesn't give refunds for digital games like Steam/Origin do.

Wait, hold up.

You actually got a working copy through the Windows Store? I've only heard horror stories.

But yeah, that's kinda shitty. Kinda glad I held off on buying it and decided to watch an LP instead. I loved the Gears series, but it seems the PC version isn't worth the hassle.

I got it for Xbox One.

Ah, fair enough, that's probably why then. I've heard horror stories for the PC version revolving around people buying it, then not being able to download it. Or buying it, downloading it and having the download fluctuate between 90Mbs and 140Gbs. :p

Microsoft know their popular IPs and won't let such a juicy chance at milking fanbases for every available penny they're worth just slip away at the cost of something silly like artistic integrity. Cut loose the ties, it ain't going to get any better while they see it as successful. Like a spoilt child, they will keep pushing as long as people keep letting them.

When money stops talking, then this practice has a chance of going the way of the woolly mammoth. Sadly it won't though. Sadly further is the fact the woolly mammoth deserves another chance but will probably never get one.

It only affects the Horde Co-Op PvE mode thankfully, but all the cosmetics for the PvP mode are also locked in the crates.

Oh wow. I didn't play the Horde mode when I played through Gears 4 but that just sounds ridiculous. Seems like since the third game Microsoft have been steadily getting worse on the micro-transactions.

I feel as though people who love multiplayer should be more patient in an act of spite against the people who pull things like this. Anything I accomplish without the special doohickies that are locked away effectively means I'm a total badass. That's bragging rights. You don't get more hardcore than "I don't need special loot to win". They're nice, but in multiplayer it's about skill, right?

Welcome to how Mass Effect 3 worked. While XP allowed you to level up and upgrade your skills, the only way to get more weapons was through loot crates. Some of those weapons were terrible, while others basically made you a living god in the MP-mode and the decision was down to RNG (with good weapons being rarer, of course). On top of that, if you wanted the better/cooler classes those were also only found in the loot crates. It is a very shitty system that is obviously designed to make people reach for their wallets.

You get people the industry calls 'whales' who want the best things right away, and they will drop money on the game to so. Many games base their whole income around theses players spending several thousand each, each and every month.

If I may go on a tangent, the recent Halloween event got me explaining Overwatches loot system to my Warframe buddies, and their general response was 'wow, and people complain about RNG here'.

Feels weird knowing my primary F2P game of choice is less crappy and onerous about microtransaction than a lot of full price AAA games these days.

Yeah, I already know about that. I was saying that that shouldn't go on because it's obviously stupid.

You took the words out of my mouth. I played multiplayer in ME3 because I found the Vangard class gameplay pretty fun. But I never got the Evicerator (the weapon that I loved to use in single-player), and it wasn't even rare drop! Gameplay features locked behind gambling walls (not even paywalls) is a pretty shitty thing to do.

Since I couldn't get a refund I decided to keep playing it at least for a little MP and to see the story (since I liked the first three games).

The Campaign has been good so far and the MP is actually pretty enjoyable. But the Horde stuff is definitely BS as the Classes and their abilities seem to be designed around these skills, meaning that you're significantly less effective without them.

I misread Gears as God. My mind went to confused, to pissed off to no end, to confused again when I read the words "cover", then very very embarrassed.

Well, that sucks. Didn't think to buy it anyways, but it really sucks.
