ok title is a bit dramatic I know...

thease days with the internet, often you dont go into somthing (game/movie/album) without some Idea of how it was received by critics, all it takes is a google search and you can decide there and then if somthing is worth your time/money

and maybe..somtimes you dont (thats what Im talking about here) you come across somthing, and you like it REALLY like, in fact you think its really good and it brings you a nice amount of joy

and then mabye out of curiosity or whatever you see the reveiws and scores

and holy shit...its terrible

and dont just mean the "critics dont know what they are talking about!" type thing, but also when your confused and have to question to your own judgment..because your just not seeing it

so has this ever happned to you?

this happned with the first ghost rider movie..at the time (I can definetly see it now)

but the real motivation for this thread was an album that came out recently, I was VERY impressed and you could almost say I loved it (the songs I got off Itunes..I was GOING to get the rest)

that was untill out of morbid curiosity I look at some reveiws...I was GENUINLY surprised at how low it got

1. yes I know music is different to videogames and movies (hell Ive hated some well reveiwed stuff)

2. ita not so much being "buthurt" (thats the term right?) as more "damn...do I really have terrible taste in music?"

Never really been hurt by critics. I remember Yahtzee once saying something or other about how Pokemon players are __________. Okay, so I don't remember the important part but I took that as my title for a bit because I can laugh at myself like that. I know what I like, I actually really don't care what other peoples tastes are. I enjoy what I enjoy; I feel no need to convert others. I will of course spread word of what I enjoy but not to an obnoxious degree.

So no, no critic has yet to rip my heart out. It remains in my chest for now.

No, not really.

If I enjoy something then no one can say I'm a bad person for enjoying it and more than likely they won't change my mind.

Like how Yahtzee hates the 40K universe, or how IGN always give negative reviews to Koei games. In fact if there's anything that both Yahtzee and IGN have taught me it's that I shouldn't care about other people's opinions on anything and that I can't judge something until I've experienced it (whether that be a game, movie, book, music etc.).

Which means that not only has a "critic" never ripped my heart out, but that they probably never will.

Not really.
I think there's something more wrong with the critic in question rather than my own enjoyment.

Like, how a film like Pandorum got nothing but horrid reviews is beyond me since the film itself is amazing.

But then again, critics don't know shit for the most part.
Just look at virtually any Academy Awards results.

Wait a minute, are you seriously letting the opinions of others on a pretty subjective subject (entertainment) dictate what you do and don't buy or even enjoy? Total herd mentality if ever I've seen it. Critics can be flat-out wrong, just as an example many classic films and music of the past were universally panned at release by self-appointed judges resulting in the creators dying penniless and disgraced, only years later has the general consensus swayed to the opposite end of the spectrum and those same artists are now held as pioneers.

There is nothing wrong with liking something "bad".

Using your film as an example, despite critics' attempts to sway public opinion, it made $52million on it's opening weekend in the USA alone. Half a year later it had grossed almost $238million worldwide. Obviously more than a few people disagreed with them. If you enjoy something that is all that matters, just remember to support whoever it is who brought you that enjoyment and buy their stuff!

I used to experience such moments every now and then during my teenage years. However, in more recent years I've learned not to let others dictate what I should and should not like. Nowadays I usually just dismiss such reviews as another instance of "different strokes for different folks." Or if they're particularly mean-spirited about it, "just another twat not worth paying attention to."

Hell, sometimes I wonder if I missed my calling when I read some critics and their so-called "reviews." Seems like some publishers will let anyone with a semi-competent grasp of proper grammar and a messiah complex have a go at critiquing things.

From the title I expected a thread on how a critic (or a self-proclaimed one) shredded something you yourself put a lot of effort and time into creating. Then I could relate.

MovieBob hated Sherlock Holmes 2. I responded by going to see it twice in the cinemas.

Anyway, I don't actually listen to critics. If I like a game, I like it. If I hate a game, I hate it. I am not going to listen to a guy (or girl) I've never met from Australia or America or even down my street who almost certainly does not have the exact same taste in games as everyone else in the world.
I take critics as more entertainment than actually taking what they say to heart.

Its not herd mentality I dont really know what it is, dissapointment I guess,

then again Im not sure sure about so called "music critics" theres just to much subjectivity

and who the fuck listens to "music critics" anyway? how sage francis Li(f)e gets lower than Drake fucking "nasal voice" "thank me later" Is still beyond me

/rant

Ill get over it, and time will tell if It has last apeal for me

There's a fundamental difference to be considered between what's successful commerically, what's successful critically, and what you yourself enjoy, whether that's one, the other, or a mix of the two, in whatever proportion.

I very seldom watch new movies or buy new music, it must be said, so I tend not to encounter contemporary criticism terribly often, in all honesty, and I enjoy a mixture of commercially and critically successful films etc.

Not entirely sure what the situation was critically or commercially was viz... Scott Pilgrim, let's say, but I watched it with my sister recently, and found it a delicate mix of immature, boring, and depressing.

For many years I thoroughly enjoyed watching Pluto Nash only to find out one day that it has been labelled one of the worst movies ever made..

Though I played Alpha Protocol after hearing of it's rather lackluster reviews since it was super cheap on Steam and ended up wondering why it was received that way since I really liked it.
This right here. I preordered Alpha Protocol and went into the game without any bias at all and fully enjoyed it. But once I was done and started checking up on things all I ever saw was hate hate hate. Incredibly low scores and bad reviews all around. Any attempt to defend it was immediately shot down and belittled. Next thing I know Sega announces no DLC or sequel will ever be made for it. That's when my heart was ripped out. Bad reviews destroyed this game and in my mind it was completely unjustified.

The Village is one of my favourite films...yeah, it sort of sucks when people hate something so much for no discernible reason. You can never really know for sure until you experience the media yourself.

Not really; with the exception of Yahtzee, I've never really seen a critic pan anything I like really. And there, its because Yahtzee didn't like Oblivion; and that was funny.

AP is a difficult example because it both deserved the criticism it got and was a very good game at the same time. This is pretty par for the course with Obsidian. They release excellent games that are so broken on so many levels they're almost impossible to appreciate until years of patches and community fixes have been applied, and by then it's almost too late.

As for the OP...I find myself agreeing with critical consensus more often than not, and when I don't I usually just file away whatever it is under the category of "guilty pleasure". Usually I can understand what it is they're complaining about. Sometimes that spoils it for me. Other times, I find I just don't care.
