When was the last time you ever had a civilized discussion with someone whose beliefs were different from yours? Mine was about six months ago and the subject was abortion. There was a refreshing absence of shouting. I ask because I'm just curious as to whether or not that's possible in this (very partisan) day and age.

I live in the U.S. I don't get ANY logical conversations, and if you want to even THINK about finding someone else in my local area and agegroup who isn't a complete imbicile, you sir, are one of them.

Well i'm constantly trying to persuade my mother that nuclear power is better for the environment than coal...

Its generally pointless as she denies all scientific fact.

Probably about 3 months ago. I had a lovely chat to a couple of mormons about life, god and the meaning of things. So long as you engage the person on an intellectual level and both parties are willing to discuss thier own views and also be respectful of the other persons view it is all fine. The issue is when you get two people who believe that it is duty to convert the other person, thats when it ends in shouting and yelling and thermo-nuclear war!

Never. Politics and religion can't be discussed civilly.
Yes, they can, but only if both parties are willing to see the two sides of an issue, and neither party acts condescending toward the other. Meaning very rarely.

Just this previous Sunday, actually. My Catholic friend is very unconfrontational, but will defend his beliefs. It makes for good deabates without any shouting. : )

Never, because for some reason everytime I do it's with someone that doesn't really want to discuss and just really wants to lecture and vent.

I live in rural North Carolina. I'm liberal. I'm sure you can find someone who's willing to engage in a friendly debate, so apparently I'm an imbecile by your logic.

About one year ago on the "Ship of Fools" board. We had a really interesting discussion about our respective religious/political backgrounds. About the last time a I was ever in a forum where people with different beliefs could just talk.

Okay, you would have to see what my town is like to understand. It's like... Retarted... Nine BILLION percent of the population are bible-banning conservatives(literally...), Oh and theres this place called the "Westboro Baptist Church" here too. The kids? The kids still havent formed thier brains right and I think there might be some residual falllout from a nuclear incident or SOMETHING...

Almost every week with a friend of mine. We discuss essentially anything in a civilized manner. From religion to life after death to scientific matters to people(in general, not specific ones).

You live in the same place as the Westboro Baptist Church? I stand corrected. Excuse me while I go make myself a little "imbecile" hat.

I honestly can't remember. I feel like I've had one, but I can't ever recall a specific instance. I think I've had some pretty interesting debates with people on this site (but only about government in the very general sense, it always gets nasty when you get into specifics, seems like).

Once. But it was many moons ago and it was with a 9 year old super genius named Drake Weinberger (pronounced: Vine~berger).

We discussed the logic (or lack thereof) of the American political system and economy. Sadly drake had to leave a month or so later.

Every day...of course, they're religious/political discussions between myself and someone who believes the same thing as me.

Here's another question...when was the last time you tried to have a religious debate with a religious person and they pulled the "I'm so offended we're even discussing this" card and wouldn't have a bar of it? Mine was about 3 weeks ago.
