Okay, so i was visiting my brother at the other end of the country over the weekend, and while wandering around his city of residence, Cork, we encountered a rather small market type thing called "Cork world book fair". I was looking through the various novels and history books on show, when something caught my eye, a rather damaged and faded spine.
I picked up the book, entitled "When we were boys" and written by someone called William O'brien, i looked inside and saw that it was published in 1890, and was given to somebody called Richard Aldwell in 1901.
So, my fellow escapists, do any of you know any place (preferably in the UK) where i could sell this work of literature or just aid a collector?

also, this book doesnt seem to be very famous, so most of you probably haven't heard of it.

just googled it and found out that the author, was in fact, an MP. hmmmmm

I haven't heard of it at all before. I know in the States they have antique roadshows where people can get appraisals of their historical items. You might want to try finding the UK equivalent of that. Otherwise I don't know, google is your friend.

That's awesome. I have no idea where you could sell it, but finding something like that in Cork is a treat.
yeah, i would have stayed at that market thing longer, but some guy was yelling into a microphone next to the stall, gave me a headache after ten minutes :(

NO WIKI PAGE!? Just to warn you, if it's like that then the book could be really really valuable. I would suggest trying to find someone trustworthy and who knows alot about this stuff. Read the book first though, as it could be interesting.
yeah, i might get around to reading it, cost me 5 euros, and far as i can see, theres not even a mention of it in the authors wiki page.

The UK has its own show, and I think it's where PBS got the idea from.

OT: I agree with Redlin- Go on antiques roadshow, but wear an Escapist t-shirt when you get it appraised so we know it's you.

Try doing some research on the author to check if it's known that he wrote the book. If not, write to an Irish newspaper about it. You never know.
well, according to many websites he did indeed write the book, as the front cover suggests, but he was also an MP for sinn fein, and wrote the book during his time in prison 0.o

haha, i currently lack the escapist themed clothing to do that, but i think i will try to get it in a newspaper and if that fails, i might try the antiques roadshow at some point :)

Or it could be worthless.

If I wrote a shit novel, the only one if it's kind, it wouldn't be worth shit in 100 years.

OP Don't get your hopes up.
my hopes shall remain up till they are inevitably dragged down by the monotony of human existence. sadly there is only one page with results for the book on google.

it looks old though, so its worth something, right?

Well, it's old the 2009 print is £18.57 for paperback on amazon. So I'm guessing an antique book collector will want it they will likely pay handsomely for it.

and there goes my hopes of selling it on Amazon, the 1890 version is only going for £27.00, though mine appears to be in a lot worse condition.
EDIT: ah, the one on amazon is a reproduction.

No serial number that i can see and the publisher appears to be long out of business.

It's probably incredibly rare, I can't find it on ebay. Or an original 1890 print on amazon. Best bet is probably antiques roadshow.

Its unlikely to be worth a lot of money, there have been millions of books published over the last 200 years and most of them aren't that interesting. The fact that it has been inscribed also reduces value, unless the person it was sent too was famous, book collectors are just as fussy as comic book collectors. If you want to check a value try using this link http://www.aba.org.uk/booksellers, you should be able to find a shop near you. If there isn't one close, just ebay it, collectors luck there.
