While platformers are no longer that much of a dominent genre in video games anymore I am stunned by how little they are made for the next gen systems and how an even smaller amount are 3d. Games within this genre on 360 and the PS3 are prodomenantly aimed for kids or are poor mocie tie ins such as Kung Fu Panda and while the Wii does have a greater amountof platformers many of them I find are still of a poor quality. Do any of you lot have an oppinion on this and would be able to highlight some hidden platforming gems of this generation (preferably on the 360 or Wii since I own them, but if you can name some for the PS3 for other readers.)that I should check out.

As aside note the reason I speak mostly of the lack of 3d games rather than 2d ones is not because I dont like 2d games, its just that they do appear more often and thanks to things like the virtual console I have a constant stream of 2d titles and want some 3d action.

You don't see many because they are a ***** to make...well, at least it is to make one that is even halfway decent. I made one a couple years ago for a class project and it turned out fucking awful. It makes me really appreciate what Nintendo does with its 3D Mario titles. Those are the only ones that I can really think of (besides maybe Psychonauts) that are good 3D platformers.

Bar the Mario Galaxy games I can't really think of any either.Unfortunately they're just not a very popular genre these days.Much easier for company's to pump out CoD clones

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is an action platformer. Other than that, I have no idea where the platformers went.

Well Sony just updated its PS3 firmware just to get ready for 3d gaming. But hey, to actually play a 3d game don't you need a 3d TV??? And after spending 1800 for a 55" HDTV why would I go out and get a new $2500 3d TV to play games that don't even exist now?? Nope not this girl!

Rare stopped making them.

Rare platformers are really the only ones worth remembering, with a slight exception for Mario.

Well, Ratchet and Clank are still there, but there are indeed much less of 3D platformers nowadays.

Or is there?

You see, there are two kinds of platforming games - cartoony ones (R&C, Jak series, Psychonauts, etc.) and realistic ones (Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia). Since in this console generation so-called "realism" is all the rage, most platformers made are of realistic variety. For example Uncharted series, the aforementioned Prince of Persia, and even Mirror's Edge (a first-person platforming game). So there are still quite few around, it's just that they are less obvious. How about that interpretation?

I personally prefer the more classic type as the later you mentioned and while I see what you mean by them being less obvious nowdays some games do strech the definistion of a platformer to far, for example the Arkham Asylum is classed as a platform game when searched for on a 360.

Um you do realise this is 3D rendering, which has been common for years in many genres, not 3D display?

Platformers have kind of gone the way of the point and click adventure game.

Darksiders an unholy blending of Zelda, portal and Dante's Inferno! On Platforms.

The hover tank levels in Mass effect 2 were Platform levels! To such an extent I was half expecting cybered Mushrooms to turn up!

There are some, but I don't think the money is there right now. Wait until the FPS craze is over, then we should see more being made.
