I know that games today still have multiplayer, but what happened to four friends being able to sit down in front of one tv and split the screen into four parts. Some of my best memories are playing multiplayer goldeneye for the N64. Games today only have two player multiplayer. And i know that you can have 4+ people when you go online for multiplayer, but i want my 4 way split screen back. Is it really better to just have all the multiplayer online?

Its cause they want you to buy a console and then the internet connection and then pay for live access or whatever and get other poeple to do the same.

There are still games with 4 player multiplayer.
Call of Duty 4 and 5, Halo 3, Borderlands, any sports game comes to mind.
Of course, there are more, but those are off the top of my head.

What are you talking about?

I play four-player split screen on Modern Warfare all the time.....

I don't know about Borderlands however, I don't own it.

When the internet came into existence game developers realized that now instead of 4 people playing together they could have 40 people playing together. I don't know about you but I think the more than 4 mentality was a good mentality to have. And usually most games with multiplayer will let you set up closed matches so u can limit the number of people and who gets in. That way you and 3 of your friends can make your own closed game and play a 4 person game.

It's a shame that so few games have split screen now a days. I really miss it.

I don't know, I never tried it. Being that it has 2 player, I assumed it would have 4.

Because consoles don't have the power to do it successfully all the time. Take a game then X it by 4 and the console just can not render 4 different players on different sections of the level and the elevated level of action. THats why halo 3 cod 4 and other split screen games "de-content" levels and/or reduce the draw distances so much. Or why co-op games chug.

All that has to be done to go from 2 to 4 players is half the framerate. This is also less noticeable because you're playing on a quarter of a TV screen anyway.

I do miss having four player splitscreen sometimes, but it's offset by the fact that online gaming is much more important now, especially when you can ust party up with your friends online.

Lots of games though are only hitting 30fps on consoles. So you have to decontent lvls or reduce draw distances among other things, to keep that 30fps.

It doesn't. Just 2 player split screen and 4 player online.
That's quite disappointing.
Although, you can do system link, so I'll be fine.

Personally, I'm not all that fond of splitscreen, let alone split four ways. How big of a TV do you have? I thought that was what LAN parties were supposed to fix...
