Essentially I love anime. Well action anime anyway. And while watching Fullmetal Alchemist I thought to myself, "Holy Hell, I want to watch Gundam for no particular reason." And so I endeavored to do so only to realize

HOLY SHIT THERE IS ALOT OF DIFFERENT GUNDAM SERIES

And so I was curious oh wonderous escapist forums. Where should I start. As I understand it the stories arent really linked so I guess I want to start with the best one.

Also I will except statements that begin with "If you like Gundam you should watch {this}!"

I personally enjoyed Gundam 00 very much. Wing was good, but its not the end-all-be-all of Gundam, it's just the first really popular one in America. The original was great, as was Zeta, but if you're looking for vintage, I'd start with Victory. SEED was alright, but I think 00 was much better.

I'd watch Wing first. Then Seed or 00.

wasn't the first one G Gundam? I also loved that one the most. After a while, I got the same problem and lost track of the plots. One doesn't even seem to be gundams, just giant ships and stuff in space. Sad...

...well i guess Gundam Wing. personally i think all the Gundam series get kind of boring.

if your in the mood for giant robots you might give Big O or Outlaw Star a go.

Aslong as you start with the beginning series in that particular timeline it doesn't matter which one you choose.

Universal Century has the most stuff in seeing as it was the first one and has various series, OVAs, films and such.

EDIT: Funny to see how no-one knows that the first series was Mobile Suit Gundam. Actually, its not funny, just kinda sad.

You should probably watch Mobile Suit Gundam 08th M.S. Team, since it is very short and takes place in the original Gundam universe (Universal Century), during the One Year War.

Aside from that, you should probably watch the original series, Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 or the movie version of the series if you're in a hurry.

edit: Wow, you guys really like Gundam Wing. Does nobody watch the original series anymore?

If I remember correctly Wing involved Hero yes?

If so I believe I've seen a few episodes of it billions of years ago.

Also I suppose the term best probably should be clarified. I like shiny animes with lots of action, little to no love interest, and characters worth giving a damn about. A la Naruto, Bleach {sometimes}, Death Note, FMA, Avatar, Rurouni Kenshin, Fate/Stay Night, and Elfen Lied.

So if there is a Gundam series where A robot who controls the elements is working to get back his little brothers body which was taken by a hollow who uses a notebook to kill people. Thats what I'm looking for.

Well, everyone is saying Wing. I'd agree with that, but I say start with 08th MS Team first. It's more down to earth than the other series. No Newtypes/Coordinators/whatever. Just the team, the enemies, and the good guys or jackasses on both sides (present in pretty much every series).

Gundam shows never turn out to be so supernatural or mythical. The machines are hardware and it's all about the characters' stories. And stuff blowing up occasionally, but it's more about the characters than anything.

What about Evangelion. Where the hell does that start. And is it worth watching.

Apparently I have a hankering for giant robot fight scenes. Though I think I've out grown Zoids

Well, Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ are all one continous story line, so maybe that. I want to watch it actually after playing DW:Gundam. The rest are their own stories. Wing is the most popular though. There is one about fighting Street Fighter style, but I dont like that one, and its not very Gundamy.

well i would say start with one of the more recent ones, they are just easier to watch, unless your really into retro anime, then go straight to the original series.

So:
Gundam Wing: Very good plot, excellent pacing and characters, and some pretty cool action. The story is more plot driven then character driven though, this is not a bad thing, just a matter of taste. The compulsory love subplot feels very...well compulsory, it doesn't add anything to the story and just feels tacked on, however it does get very little screen time so its all good.

Gundam SeeD: There is a reason this is probably one of the most poplar gundam series out there, but generally regarded by gundam fans as one of the worst, although not bad by any standards. It's essentially just gundam watered down, and given a teen drama spin. As far as the teen drama goes, its very well written and handled intelligently, however if you are older than 18 then all the emo melodrama will most likely get on your nerves a bit. The sequel series, SeeD Destiny, is barely worth watching unless you really enjoyed SeeD.

Gundam 00: The most recent series. It is fairly unique from other gundam series in that it is set in our future, and based on our current world affairs and problems. I feel the creators definitely wanted to take a more serious and realistic approach to the series. The plot is based heavily in politics and world affairs, and any sort of character development get pushed almost entirely to the side. However it seams to me that the creators lost confidence and decided to tack on some generic, pointless, anime-esque villains and plot devices just to play it safe, it detracts from the series in my opinion.

All in all these are all very good series to start off with, you dont need to know anything about gundam to understand them and they are all very enjoyable.

I think I've written about this before. Yep, I have. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.203745-New-Lightsaber-Wielding-Giant-Gundam-Finally-Complete?page=2#6828541]

C/p:

-Original Gundam (aka Mobile Suit Gundam, aka Gundam 0079) is a classic for a reason, but watch the abridged movie trilogy version rather than the full series. It cuts out some of the REALLY DATED 1979 animation, removes some of the filler, has better pacing - etc.

-Zeta Gundam is the direct sequel to the above, and considered by some to be the best in the franchise, though the main character can get tiresome. It's also very dark. It's WATCHABLE on its own, but you'll appreciate it more if you've seen the first MSG.

-Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is a short six-episode sidestory set during the events of Mobile Suit Gundam. It's a bit more character-focused than the other series, and honestly some of the best six episodes anywhere in Gundam. Familiarity with the MSG One-Year War is nice, but not necessary.

-Gundam Wing is one of the first alternate universe series that doesn't have anything to do with the universe of the original MSG. It's one of the more accessible series since you don't need to know anything else, but I personally found that all the themes in Wing were done better in...

-Gundam 00, which is the latest in the franchise. While most of the Gundam series are set in alternate universes like After Colony or Universal Century, 00 is set in Anno Domini - OUR universe. It's a very post-9/11 series, dealing with conflict in the middle east and energy. The last half has severe pacing issues, but it's overall pretty good.

-Gundam SEED is the most popular in Japan other than the first Gundam. It's actually essentially a reinterpretation of the first Gundam's storyline until about halfway through when it diverges, and the main character is a bit of a whiner at first (...until it diverges, really). Just stay away from Gundam SEED Destiny, the sequel, which starts out fantastic but then crashes and burns in the last quarter of the series.

-G Gundam is DBZ meets giant robots. It's silly and horribly cheesy but kind of awesome anyway.

-Turn A Gundam's title literally can be interpreted as "for all Gundams." It's the 20th anniversary series done by the original director, and is probably the most unique Gundam series. It's got a weird "Gundam as done by Hayao Miyazaki" steampunk feel to it, though it is also VERY SLOW at points - and you'll probably appreciate the references and in-jokes more if you're familiar with the franchise before watching it.
