Which 3D-Movie would really show me what 3D-technology can do?

As a gift from my fiancee´s father-in-law, I this week received a TV with 3D capabilities. He was upgrading and kindly gave us his "old" TV!
I have never really considered getting a 3D TV because I simply can´t afford one, plus that I can´t shake the feeling that it´s just a gimmick at this point, but I wasn´t going to tell him that!

I do love watching movies and I have to admit that I am looking forward to testing this sleek, sexy piece of space-tech now hanging on the wall! However, seeing as I´m not exactly rich and have to spend my money wisely: what are the best 3D movies out there? If you were to pick one 3D movie to showcase the technology, which would it be?

Genre does not really matter, just recommend me something that shows me what the technology can do!

Thanks for the help!

There have been three that I've seen where 3D added to the experience. I'm not sure if one of them is yet on home video. Those three movies are Avatar, Hugo, and Gravity. The last one should be on home video soon if it isn't already. All three of them use 3D to great effect. Animated films are also a good choice, although I wouldn't say it "added" to anything.

Thanks man!
I figured Avatar would make an early appearance, and it makes a strong candidate because I´ve seen it a few times and would be able to notice the differences between 2D and 3D.
Hugo sort of slipped through unnoticed. Haven´t seen it and don´t really know anything about it... I guess it would be interesting to go from 3D to 2D and experience the differences that way!
Gravity is a very good suggestion! Will have to wait until February 25th tough...

Obviously one is Avatar, and I haven't seen it (I couldn't even watch the trailer. It freaked me out) Gravity is pretty good as well, so I've heard. I would also say Dredd in 3D was fucking awesome, and The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey was great too. I'll even put out Pacific Rim just because it's giant robots punch giant monsters in 3D

The best 3-D movie I ever saw was, no question, Coraline. That movie was AMAZING in 3-D on the big screen. I can't say for sure whether it'll have the same impact on a 3-D tv, but I saw that movie in theaters 3 times, simply because I knew I'd never get another chance to see it like that again.

Nothing else ever came close for me. Not even Avatar.

How to train your dragon is a good one, I honestly never thought a CGI movie could seem so 'alive' (for lack of a better term).

Avatar, The Hobbit films and Gravity. I've also seen thing like Iron Man, Thor, a few Dreamworks animated films and some others that I can't remember. Those are the only four which particularly stick to me. Particularly Gravity. Those destruction scenes...Jesus Christ, the depth of field adds insurmountably to the chaos and sheer digital feat.

Completely agree. Just unbelievably good. It's probably the only movie that I would actively try to re-watch in 3D (usually once I've seen something in 3D once that's enough for me, even when the 3D's good).

Dredd was also good in 3D. They actually used the 3D to good effect rather than "just because."

I'm not an expert, but from my experience TV quality 3D is a bit wonky compared to watching it in the theater. I've only seen a few 3D TVs on display, but it really didn't look as good as on the big screen. I don't know how much difference there is if any in the 3D tech between the two, but the dip in quality was very noticable to me.

To me though, 3D never added anything in the longterm. That is to say, when I think back to a movie I saw in 3D, I can reflect on how good the acting was, how well it was shot and paced, and how great the sound design and music was, but how 3D it was never sticks out in my memory.

Ordinarily I don't like 3D though I must say it constituted one of Gravity's key "delights" (quote unquote since it's mostly a sadomasochistic experience filled with vertigo, claustrophobia and agoraphobia).

The Hobbit movies are OK though I don't much like the whole 48 FPS issue, it gives the image a hyperrealistic feel that takes me out of the thing.

Yeah I suppose...

Off the top of my head...

How To Train Your Dragon, Coraline, Avatar, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph and Pacific Rim were absolutely beautiful.

I generally don't like 3D, but when it comes to CGI animation, it just...works, y'know?

Agreed on the animation thing. I'd add Up and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. Post production 3D on The Nightmare Before Christmas was pretty good, too.
