Which movie deserves a game adaptation?

I like the old "Which game would make a good movie?" debate as much as anyone - I can argue whether or not Zelda should get a movie before Half-Life all day long. But I think it's more interesting to note that while the only video game movie on the horizon [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z-211gEJOg] is being almost universally panned, two of last year's most popular games were movie adaptations that were better than the last few movies in their respective franchises.

So what should be next? How would you adapt the story and world of a movie to a game? What genre should it be?

To start off, I'll vote for Escape from New York. Besides the fact one of the most popular franchises in the medium is essentially a long piece of fanfic for it, it has a really video game-esque premise, so much so that they ripped it off for Arkham City: In the near future, the USA has gone so far down the toilet that Manhattan Island has been completely sealed off and used as a dumping ground for anyone who messes with the soldiers dishing out nationwide martial law. When Air Force One is shot down over the prison and the President is captured, one good guy is dropped in with orders to rescue him or be killed, and has to survive the city's ruined streets on his own.

The game would be easy to design: Just have a GTA-style sandbox with no police, and all the civilians have guns. Let the literal and figurative fireworks happen.

Note: My first choice was Blade Runner, but they already made an (apparently) quite good adventure game of it in the late nineties:

I know there have been mods and whatnot and a game was being released (it either sucked or it got canceled...I actually don't remember) but....

STARSHIP TROOPERS

You get enemy variety. You get gun variety. There are multiple groups you can follow (flight sim for the pilots; puzzle games for intelligence; FPS for the ground troops; maybe some strategy gaming if you want to control the generals; lots of variety). You could have a ton of fun with the satire-nature of the movies. Neil Patrick Harris can do stuff!!!

Starship troopers, yes that's an awsome idea hell starcraft is halfway there there's tons of great player maps based on it.

But for my vote, a movie turned video game? are we sticking to just movies or can we do tv shows too?

for movie: gotta go Pacific rim, build a jager and fight, a real game not that xbl one, not bad but really simple, a game that took advantage of the cco-op element would be insane, where you have to try and co-pilot a jager with someone else might be frustrating as hell until you could get the hang of it.

IF we do tv shows, either supernatural or farscape.

supernatural has a way built in mmo potential, design your own hunter, build a car, even build a team of 2-4 other hunters and travel around working cases and fight demons. would be a great game if done right.

Although I haven't seen Edge of Tomorrow/Live Die Repeat, I do know the basic synopsis of it[footnote]Tom Cruise plays a soldier essentially stuck in a time loop where he can't die and just comes back to life but with all of his memory intact. So he has to live through his mission, learning all of the lessons and tricks by good old trial and error.[/footnote], and I think the idea of integrating dying and respawning into the plot and mechanics of a game is a cool one. A bit like Braid, but a shooter instead of a puzzle game.

Seriously, a Fantastic Four, Action-Adventure 4 player co-op game of bad-assery, is longer overdue then my wife's pregnancy.

Attack on Precinct 13. How about an action, survival, resource management game in which you have to survive an entire night (in real time!) of attacks from an unrelenting gang that throws increasingly more force at your understaffed precinct? Featuring stuff like barricade building, trap making and group dynamics in which the different people in the precinct doesn't always get along and will suffer stress as the night wears on and things start looking grim.

Sin City would make a hell of an open-world game. Something like GTA style, just all in black and white. I haven't seen the movies completely, but they seem like they would make a great game.

Starship Troopers was already mentioned, so I just went with my second choice.

I re-watched Dredd the other day (the excellent Karl Urban version, not the god awful Sylvester Stallone version) and I was thinking while watching it that it would make an excellent FPS.

- 200 or so floors with hundreds of enemies to fight
- Dredd's gun has lots of different ammo types which would add a tactical element
- Boss characters
- AI or player controlled partner
- Side quests to help innocent civs

I've never read any of the comics but I guess there is lots of potential to tell other stories in that world, so you could probably make several games. The sequel could be an open world game in the whole of the Mega City. Just don't let Ubisoft make it. Actually, it should be Rocksteady's next project after they're done with Batman.

I think Sucker Punch would make a great game, and that was on my mind when I watched it. Have all the asylum universe stuff be like various stealth sections with proper mechanics, and have the fantasy universe stuff be all out shooting (or in the case of the Japanese segment, blades to #blazeit to). There are plenty of set pieces, though I imagine they'd have to stretch it out a bunch.

Does Ghost in the Shell count as a movie?

Because I always thought that setting and world was just begging for a game.

Granted, it's been tried multiple times, but past attempts resulted in a PS1 tank game, a cheap, clunky PS2 action game and, more recently, a multiplayer deathmatch shooter. All of which rather seemed to be missing the point.

Ninja Scroll could be a nice contender, since with its semi-intrigue and larger-than-life villains it's practically Metal Gear Solid set in medieval Japan. But then we already have the Onimusha games... well, the first two anyway.

There is an older Starship Troopers RTS called Terran Ascendancy. I believe it is abandonware so you can get it free. I personally really dig it, very Xcom in style but following a set string of missions. The FPS that came out was pretty awful though.

I think Black Hawk Down has potential to be a good game. Each level can be a different stage in the insertion and then evacuation of the troops involved in the raid. Or could manage the raid from start to finish in real time, moving each independent section of forces from one objective to the next in whichever way you feel best.

I'm thinking it might be best as a top-down strategy game... could work as an FPS, but I wouldn't want it to be; simply because I'm so jaded with the FPS genre at present. Also could work in the style of Conflict: Desert Storm.

Mechanics would include:
Having to keep up a defensive perimeter (if under attack),
Managing ammunition,
Taking as little casualties as possible,
If someone is wounded you have to try to evac them with you,
Achieving objectives as soon as possible,
Maybe have a scoring system based on how well you do the things above.

I think a Jurassic Park game based on the upcoming movie would be awesome. Think Dead Island/Dying Light, only with various dinosaurs. Escape the island!

Hunt out first aid stations, park security satellite offices, and food court locations. Travel during the day, try to find places to hide at night. Is the north dock still operational? Avoid the falling bombs after a sole jet sent from Costa Rica starts attack runs in an effort to cleanse the island. Don't get swarmed by the Compsognathus nests, which will put you to sleep if you get bitten enough, at which point they eat you alive in tiny bites.

Galaxy Quest! Differing environments, lots of different characters and enemies, space war, gun slinging, platform puzzles!

They could "beam" down to Earth and have missions at the Conventions, including fighting under-cover aliens hiding in plain site.

I'd buy it if it were considered a good game.

That would be neat. So far the only good JP game has been Operation Genesis, the park building one/

I honestly think there's a ton of potential material to make a great JP game, without any actor likenesses of course. I could do without a creepy robotic Chris Pratt face.

Certain areas could turn advantageous if explored, like the main power room to re-energize electric fences, in addition to turning certain ones off as part of a planned escape. Inner access doors could be unlocked/locked at will once the player gets to the security office ("It's a UNIX system!"). If the entire park was breached then herbivore areas should be avoided as the hunters will soon come a calling. The most common weapon would be a hefty cattle prod-like device (which was used for wrangling). And there could just be a handful of firearms, like shotguns, which would have to be used sparingly as the report would only attract predators.

I dunno, I just have a few images in my mind, like if it were a multiplayer survival game, with someone exiting an external doorway, only to see them disappear into the jaws of a T-Rex waiting just outside. A dev could re-use elements from the movies, like how the first sign of an approaching T-Rex is always the trembling vibrations as it stomps about. Is it coming towards you or just passing by? SHH! Everyone be very, [sub]very[/sub] [sub][sub]quiet...[/sub][/sub]

You are basically describing the initial design document for Trespasser. That game was quite literally a decade and a half before its time and it suffered a terrible fate for it. It was basically intended to be a persistent world with advanced AI dictating the dinosaurs, advanced physics and an inclination towards sandbox exploration of Site B and the dinosaurs there, complete with dinosaur on dinosaur interactions. It ran way over budget and deadline and what eventually was released was a barely functional FPS with terrible AI, inconsistent physics and bare bones areas.

There's a rather excellent Let's Play that goes through the games and talks about what could have been here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6A3SaRr26M&list=PL0058A651EB882B48]. If you've ever wanted a good Jurassic Park game there's a good chance it will break your heart though. At least it did for me, so much wasted potential.
