Just as the title asks, which state has the most citizens serving in the military in all the branches combined? Not just in most population but also in highest percentage. We could also look into which states contribute the most to a specific branch too, if we really want to go that deep. Google didn't give anything rock solid, so I'm turning to you Escapists.

And whatever state does then how come said state's citizens are more willing to serve than any of the others? Does being a Blue/Red state have anything to do with it? What about more urban and rural states?

What do you guys think?

(should this be in R&P?)

This should be in a Google Search. Paragraph 1 at least. If you can't get answers there like you said, then either they aren't that publically available or you are not looking in the right place.

And if discussing military service in regards to politics, yes, R&P it :p Although R&P is DEAD so maybe leave it here until it is moved =/

You say google didn't give anything rock solid, but that implies you got something, what was said something?

dunno, googled it and it looks like it is a pretty even split between repubs and democrats both by state and by per capita.

per 100,000:

D.C.
Hawaii
Alabama
Kansas
Maine.

Hawaii, Alabama, or Maine dont really surprise me because either there is nothing there so military may be your only career option (Alabama), or there is a significant military presence in the area such that the local economy is dependent on it (hawaii, maine).

D.C. and Kansas surprised me though. Maybe it is the only way to get away from a life of crime in D.C.....

taking away the per 100,000:

Texas
California
New York
Florida

I.E. the states with the highest population....

Kansan here. Just wondering why that would be surprising. We have a strong military tradition here. One of the largest and most famous bases in the country, Fort Riley, is here, with the most famous infantry division, the 1st Infantry (aka "The Big Red One", due to thier unit patch) is on rotation here for at least the next decade (replacing the 24th Mech Infantry). We are also one of the few states born in warfare [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleeding_Kansas]. Plus, there is the fact that [statistically] Republicans are more likely to become to become soldiers[footnote]I say statistically because Republicans make up the largest voting block in the military, with stats I have seen putting 44% Republican, 29% Democrat, and the rest split between independant and third parties[/footnote] so we have the fact we are an extremely Red state going for us.
