Any story based video game worth it's salt will always have one berk who will have gone to the greatest lengths to make your life a misery. And great levels of smugness and satisfaction can be aquired from watching the bugger get viscerally torn apart.

So, in the interests of mere speculation, add your favourite demise in the comments below. Can be any era, any method, any point in the game (to allow for ones like my favourite), only rule is, it has to be suitably impressive or painful, yes Army Of Two, I'm looking at you and your crappy anti-climactic cut scene.

My personal award for "Best Villain Death" goes to Hades in God Of War III. You almost have to appauld the guy for his tenacity, as he's still fighting after you carve large chunks out of his torso, stab him repeatedly in the back of the neck, brain him, drown him, STEAL HIS SOUL, for Petes' sake, and he only finally stays down when dragged into the River Styx by hundreds of damned souls.

That's pretty badass, dude!

OT: Maybe Vergil in Devil May Cry 3 ... it's not the "best" death, it may not even be a good one, but I still love it, because I loved him so much and was really sad that two brothers were torn apart this way ....

Whether or not they're actually villains I'll leave in the middle, but the Cobras from MGS3 sure like to go out with a bang.

And yeah, any of the God of War III ones will do too.

Uh...didn't Vergil
die in DMC as Nelo Angelo? In 3, he was still alive.

Anyways, Fontaine from Bioshock comes to mind, not just the way he died, but his little monologue before hand was just beautiful. EDIT: Also, dying by getting stabbed repeatedly with dozens of dirty needles seems to be not only brutal, but disgusting.

Another is Benny from New Vegas.
You shot me in the skull? Then tried to have me killed again by sending you goons to the hotel room? Then run away like a wimp? Oh thats cool, I'll just have Caesar crucify your sorry ass.

Well ...
He fought Mundus and lost, so Mundus transformed him into a demon - Nelo Angelo - which you permanently destroy (I think) in Devil May Cry 1. But Nelo Angelo is under the control of Mundus, so in a way, the "real" Vergil died at the end of DMC3 after battling Mundus. I just hope they don't screw him up in the new reboot thing

Myrkul from Mask of the Betrayer

After talking with the dead god for about 20 minutes, he bids you farwell. You have the option to send him to his enternal rest, using the same curse that he created in the first place.

I love his dying words "A final irony, even in this!"

Saren Arterius in Mass Effect. Bioware has a talent for making villains somewhat redeeming in the end. Also, Tom Reed from Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Final boss of Bayonetta takes one hell of a licking, and needs to be thrown into the sun.

Leaving Jon Irenicus trapped in hell was the very least her deserved.

Ah, nevermind Vergil. I thought the way Mundus himself went down was pretty swank.

Saren's death from ME1 is surprisingly powerful if you have enough Renegade/Paragon to get all the appropriate dialogue options.

Baal's death in Diablo 2 is very rewarding, if only to get to the final cutscene.

Either Arcanum of Planescape: Torment. Mentioning either by name would be a spoiler.

Kerghan can, with care (and enough persuasion skill), be convinced that he was wrong the whole time, slowly talked out of his crazy omnicidal beliefs (though as omnicidal villains go, he sounds like he might be right), and eventually just steps into the machine you brought to kill him with, so he can finally die. You don't have to lift a finger.

The Transcendent One, as part of your soul, CAN be killed, but that's really not ideal. You can, however, essentially threaten it into merging with you. Quite satisfying.

Hm, well, I'd immediately cry GlaDos, but that's too easy. A lot of people are saying DMC and GoW, but that's too easy as well.. hm.

I can't believe no one's mentioned some of those Dead Rising deaths! That rival biker? Christ! He gets like cut by his own motorcycle, then there's the psycho Brandon who like, swirly's himself, christ that game was intense... Imma go play now...

The Raincoat Killer in Deadly Premonition.
Going Super Saiyan then taking an axe deflected by a 9mm round to the chest which is then struck by lightning SEVEN TIMES in a row is pretty damn awesome.

Nihilanth from Half Life 1.

DIE, YOU POS!

And then when you kill him, you feel instantly better.

Straga from Darksiders. You kill him with a portal gun, that's awesome!
