Plain and simple, which characters (heroes, villains, etc.) do you like the most, and why. To start off, my top 3 are:

1) Auron (FFX): Going by my username and avatar, this should be obvious. There are multiple reasons I love this character, first and foremost, he is literally the personification of badassery, yet he doesn't flaunt it about. He is also always calm and collected, never acting rash (save for the flashback conversation between him and Yunalesca, but that is completely understandable) and falling into the general characteristics of the berserker/warrior class. His age and mentality is also a nice break from the "too hyper, perky, and usually annoying teenager" staple characters, acting as the rightful mentor to the next generation. And finally, he is a character that doesn't let grievous injury (he made it halfway across the CONTINENT all alone after the previously mentioned conversation), or even death stop him from being awesome.

2) Kefka (FFVI): Few villains get under my skin as well as this man did. He was a rare character that I could both genuinely praise, as well as loath with all my being. Not only did he play the role of the narcissistic psychopath perfectly, he also succeeds in being an actual villain by pulling off many of his horrific plans (that are typically prevented by the heroes in other games) and actually getting me to start thinking like and agree with him. His "clown from hell" appearance also helps to draw a much needed reaction from the player (not just the other characters) whenever he shows up, making it that more frustrating when he wins, but so much more exhilarating when he's taken down.

3) Vivi (FFIX): This kid truly made it feel like I (or at least a younger version of myself) was actually involved in the story. The young black mage's personality almost perfectly fit what mine used to be, which made what happened to him that much more emotionally intriguing; I just wanted to root and cheer for this kind, timid child the whole time. I was on the erge of crying to hear that, being a prototype for artificially created mages, such a boy was ultimately built to bring about war and had a preset life duration. Despite learning about that shocking truth, though, it was heartwarming to see him basically give a middle-finger to his creator's "destiny" and forge his own albeit with some setbacks.

I've quite limited for Final Fantasy games played, but...
1) Biggs - Won't stay dead.
2) Wedge - same again.
3) Rufus Shinra - I like him. And also refuses to die.
Yeah, I can't give long explanations. I just like those characters.

He has a baby chocobo living in his hair, which just happens to be styled as an afro. Need I say more?

Couldn't really remember anyone that wasn't from Final Fantasy XIII, so I went with the least annoying out of the ones I could remember.
Okay, I use the term "least annoying" very, very loosely. I personally liked her just because almost everyone else had their grump on full blast through most of the game.

Because... I don't know why I liked him. I just did. So there.

1) Kefka Palazzo, one of my favorite villain of all time. Got to love a villain that you love to hate. He also had a simple yet awesomely fitting theme music.
2) Terra Branford, she was one of the few well fleshed out female characters of any FF game. Plus she had one of my favorite FF song as a theme.
3) Garland, for having the most complicated plan of any FF villains or villains in general I guess.

1) Vincent. Now, I hate these emo stereotypes as much as anyone else, but this guy actually has a reason to be depressed! His back story is awesome, his Limit is class (Chaos, mainly) and he got his own game which I actually quite enjoyed!

2) Vivi. He's been rated as the most popular Final Fantasy character by numerous sources. He's just adorable and you can't not like him.

3) Hmm...this one is difficult. It's a toss up between Zidane, Auron, Zell, Rikku or Reno...

In no particular order:

Ultros was a fun character. Always good for a laugh and it's too bad he hasn't come back like other creatures like the Cactar, Tonberry or, Moogles.

She's an adorable Ninja girl who always gets into trouble. I love her x3

Another adorable character! Vivi is like Orko only he's more awesome.

I get what you mean for it being difficult for having to choose between so many different characters. I myself was debating on adding Vincent, Reno, Cid (FFVII version), Zidane, Kuja, and a few others... I got frustrated with myself for making the list only include 3!

Well, hasn't been a Final Fantasy I don't enjoy... Well, main series, anyway.

In no order:

Kain Highwind: A dark Dragoon with a conflicted heart. He just pulls it off so well. He's an amazing character and I'm positively THRILLED he's in Dissidia 012

Bartz Klauser: A fun, upbeat man who wants nothing more than to adventure. He's been everwhere, done everything, and is still happy and positive.

Zack Fair: Another fun loving fellow, but one with long military training and knows ehn to get serious when he needs to. I started to cry at the ending for Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Cecil, Rosa and Kain... they're the best character trio square has ever come up with. Also, Vivi rules.

I don't think I could give much of an order, but the top three definitely consists of three of these. I can't really decide though

Zidane - IX
Vivi - IX
Galuf - V
Locke - VI
Terra - VI

Also, I feel I should give mention to Gilgamesh from V, and Ultros from VI. Encounters with these two characters were always entertaining to say the least.

Rikku, 'cause she was awesome and just freakin' adorable.
Zell, 'cause he was hilarious.
Sephiroth, 'cause he was freakin' Sephiroth. i mean, as cliched as he's become, there's a reason he always tops list of "best bad guys ever".

runner up: Wakka, 'cause he's freakin' Bender!

I have to do this in Heroes/Villains, just because it's fairly difficult to choose.

Heroes:
1. Cloud
2. Zidane
3. Terra

Thumbs up to Zack though.

Villians:
1. Sephiroth
2. Kefka
3. Garland

Nod to Gilgamesh.

I will also break it up into Heroes/Villains.

Heroes
1. Cloud Strife - He and his game helped me through the worst period of time in my life. he and I got over our personal anxieties and traumas together. As such, I feel like I resonate with Cloud more than any other FF character. :)
2. Zack Fair - The nicest guy I've ever seen in a game such as Final Fantasy. Really, he's just so damn likable.
3. Auron - He's fucking AURON!

Villains
1. Sephiroth - As Cloud is my iconic hero of the series, Sephiroth is the villain. Gotta love a villain who creates legendary mind-fucks.
2. Kefka - He is the best villain of the series, no doubt about that. Simply because, for at least a small time, he won. He was the bad guy who won.
3. Rufus Shinra - While debatable as if he's a villain anymore, I like him more than most other villains because he is purely a troll. That ones scene in Advent Children, with Kadaj's face. I shat bricks.
