Who buys shooters for single player?

Ok so after reading the amount of pure bullshit written in the last few zero punctuation threads for the shooters hes reviewed, I'm taken aback by the amount of people that think shooters have anything new to add to the single play gaming.

Before I start ranting I'm not talking about games such as Deus Ex or Bullestorm, that were designed FOR single player and should have to bring something unique to the campaign aspect of things, but more the "generic shooters" that everybody seems to think it's cool to hate on lately.

I understand a lot of people don't like multiplayer, and so want a good single experience for their £40, but realise that this is the other way round for a lot of people, including myself, who are looking for multiplayer in their games, and single player is just an 'extra'. Please don't give my Yahtzee's "it has to stand up on it's single player" crap because it doesn't, what would people who are looking for a multiplayer focused game do if every game was focused around single player?

Let's use Gears of War 3 as an example, since this was the last one that everybody has been slating. I've been playing gears since gears of war 1, and at least 95% of my time on gears has been on the multiplayer, because it's one of the few shooters that is non noob friendly, requires a while to gain skill at and continues to be challenging, you actually have to be good to do well. Do I give much of a shit about it's story? Not really, it was good for one playthrough but I left it there, then went back to multiplayer (for gears 1,2 and 3), because it's always fun and challenging to play (it's a shame only gears 3 has dedicated servers though, 1 and 2 had horrible lag problems). Despite this game being thought of as mainstream, it's multiplayer is actually the opposite, not many "casual" gamers will enjoy it because they wont put the time in to get good at it, don't understand how this can be considered as mainstream as other, more noob friendly shooters.

It really seems pointless to me for people who like single player games, to buy something that isn't intended to be focused around it's single player and then MOAN about how unoriginal it is, go buy something like Deus Ex, Mass Effect, Oblivion etc for something that will give you your moneys worth in single player, and let us multiplayer fans enjoy the stuff you call mainstream, like Halo or GoW.

TL;DR (lazy bugger): If you wasted your £40 on a modern shooter for it's single player, you're just wasting money. Either rent it or buy it if you're willing to give the multiplayer a shot, not buy it, play the campaign and ASSUME that that is all the game has to offer, then QQ about how unoriginal and mainstream it is.

Before slating something, please take multiplayer into account. [/rant]

But why? I hate multiplayer with strangers. I've never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER found it to be a good thing. This would be like me accounting that the game came with a stinkbomb when I bought it. I'd really rather pretend it didn't.

Then again, maybe this is why I generally hate all new modern shooters.

It's not that modern shooters focus on one side or the other that annoys me. Its that long standing franchises suddenly swapped from having great single player and solid multiplayer, to singly focusing on making multiplayer good on consoles and fucking over the market they had on PC for example who enjoyed the existing multiplayer style but wanted story, not just deathmatches.

For example. I played a lot of quake, to the point of semi competitive, but that was where I played for MP. Single player I migrated to call of duty or medal of honour. Similar shooter type experience, but much more sensible and longer story. I don't like that such franchises are now basically quake with single player attached.

I love mass effect, but you say that's what people should buy for story. I disagree, story used to be in all fps games, its only recently that it has been eroded for more MP focus. When MP was fine already.

If the single-player is going to suck, then don't include a single-player campaign! If a shooter boasts about it's epic story mode then it shouldn't get all upset when people point out that it's shit.

I personally do, game franchises like Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, FarCry, still offer substantial single player experiences while Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon offer decent multiplayer as well.

I agree with you on this completely

I actually couldn't agree more. I bought Gears 3 yesterday, and have spent the majority of my time on the multiplayer. It's the whole reason I bought it, I couldn't care for it's story line.

I do.

I don't need a game to bring something new to the table to be enjoyable. Sometimes I just need good action and an entertaining story.

It really depends.

Games like the old-time Medal of Honours, the original Unreal, the original Call of Dutys...

All of those had decent single player campaigns. CoD4 had an excellent one. But in more recent times, I haven't bought, nor had an interest in any. Multiplayer is fine, and FPSs are great, but I'm not keen on a 4 hr SP campaign.

I didn't use to have a choice, since my xbox wasn't connected to the internet, now though, I can get a lot of extra hours out of my shooters. :)

Ok, so having read your argument, I admit, there are a lot of points I can agree on. Personally, I'm not a fan of shooters, though I do like the occasional FPS game. Totally agree that people who want a single player experience (like myself) shouldn't bother buying something like this when clearly they are made for multiplayer. Something like Call of Duty or the like are obviously going to be all about multiplayer, but at the same time, it's not always so black & white over the whole single/multiplayer experience.

Taking your example of Gears of War. I haven't personally played it, though I have borrowed all 3 games off my sister's boyfriend and they're on my To Do list of games. However, I did occasionally watch him play it now and then. I don't know how expansive the story mode is, but he played it on single player and it seemed to have quite a good story and gameplay behind it. My point is that while a game like Gears may be initially aimed at multiplayer, it will have a good enough single player that it's actually WORTH getting it just for the story mode.
Changing genre quickly, many RTS games will have an expansive campaign mode, but when that's over with, you can go online to play against friends and other players. It's aimed at single player gaming for the first sales, but has the multiplayer option to it too.

I think I got a little off-track there. Simply put, I definitely agree that people should take all sides of a game into account BEFORE ranting and slating a game. If it's made for multiplayer, and advertised/marketed as such, then if someone buys it for the story mode and finds it lacking, that's purely their own fault.

Must admit though, the only single player-only game/s I'd love to play multiplayer on would be the new Fallout games (3/New Vegas). The eccentricity of the weaponry would make going online much more fun...

I'll buy games according to my own criteria, thanks. If it has multiplayer but still has a decent single player campaign that's fine. I doubt Uncharted 3 is going to limit its story campaign just for the multiplayer and there are others.

I went on CoD MW multiplayer once. I was called Ender and the game sorts you by kill to death versus gaming instance rank.

Move zig.

I didn't tell people what games they should buy, I didn't give them criteria. I was actually addressing the people moaning about how "bad" modern day shooters are when all they buy them for is the single player. Stop acting as if I'm telling you personally to do something, and using pompous little lines like that.

I don't like multiplayer shootes, so I don't buy them. That's it.
Also, I am most of the time fully aware of what genre the games I buy belong to. If someone claims to be disappointed by CoD's singleplayer, it's his own fault. I don't run around claiming that Super Meat Boy is too hard, that Portal has too many puzzles, or that competitive shooters put most of their focus on being a multiplayer experience.

I care about single player, and enjoy the story in shooters. I enjoy the story in Halo and Gears. I can play through them many times and still enjoy them. I have spent much more time in the campaign of Gears 1 and 2 than I have the multiplayer. Shooters used to have stories, maybe not the best stories, but they were alright. Now they are getting even lazier and just focusing on the multiplayer. Not everyone wants multiplayer.
