I got a bunch of classic films for Christmas. I've started collecting the works of Kurosawa, Stanley Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Bergman, and Francis Ford Coppola. I really like old, classic cinema, as it provides a nice break from the blockbuster age we live in.

This leads me to wonder, who is your favorite director? Which directors do you think were most skilled? Which directors work impacted you the most? And why do you think they affected you so much?

Got to go with Tarantino. Don't know if it counts as cheating though, cause really, Film Maker is his most apt title. I like creative control and creative visionaries though, and feel many things like movies are too "cut-up" by many hands.

Though I will also admit, I am not the person to best scrutinize Directors. I do not take movies as seriously as others here.

I'll have to be boring and go with Stanley Kubrick. I wouldn't be too good at explaining why, his filmmaking is just fenomenal. If I could make a comparison to architechture; When I think of the work of other good filmmakers, I think of a nice house or appartment complex. When I think of the work of Stanley Kubrick, I think of a gleaming pyramid or a colosseum.

When it comes to favourite directors (since for me 'best' and 'favourite' are two different things), Hayao Miyazaki probably tops it for obvious reasons. There's also a bunch of directors who I used to like, but either don't work much anymore or just aren't as good as they used to be, like Robert Zemeckis, Wes Anderson, and Joe Dante.

I'll second that. I think his films can easily stand shoulder to shoulder with all the great filmmakers. He is the only director I can think of that if I didn't like anything else about the movie (like the cast or the teased storyline). I would still watch the movie just on his reputation alone.

I was joking yesterday that I am going to skip Silence because it doesn't feature Italian-Americans in the mob or other people involved in stealing and killing.

Not gonna be my favorite because of its message. Christian Martyrdom.

Even though they are Martyred themselves in a place that really wants nothing to do with Christianity and does not want it to supplant thier own culture.

The movie could be good. I always like it when an established director goes outside of his comfort zone. I even liked his most reviled film The Last Temptation of Christ. What's most appealing about Silence is that it doesn't star Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo is good, but he is no Deniro.

Yet he replaced him Andrew Garfield...

And the Last Temptation of Christ was interesting in trying to Humanize Jesus.

Give Andrew Garfield a chance. He was really good in Hacksaw Ridge and 99 Homes.

I think Tarantino has made more movies that I love than any other director. I absolutely love everything he's made outside of Death Proof and The Hatefull Eight (which I do enjoy). It's extremely hard for me to put his movies in any kind of order because they are all really that good.

My favorite "classic" director would probably be Hitchcock.

Christopher Nolan has a chance to be the best if he makes a few more great movies. The Prestige may be my favorite movie of all time.

I think Edgar Wright needs a shout out as well. He directed probably the best movie trilogy of all time, The Cornetto Trilogy. And, what other directory uses the medium in such fun and interesting ways?

Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas are all great movies, but none of them are at the very top for me. I do love Scorsese, though. I rewatched The Wolf of Wall Street yesterday, which is pretty entertaining.
Its gonna be heretical for me to say this, but I did not like Taxi Driver.

My issues with it is that its very boring to watch in the beginning and has a very repetitive music track.

But than again the movie went through Production Troubles.

One movie I have yet to see is Mean Streets.

I just remember rolling my eyes at the ending. The guy busted into a building, shot a bunch of people, and the police just let him go? He isn't Batman, what happened there?
