Its simple enough. I caught the thread on should Michael Bay make a 40k movie. From what i saw the consenus is that he really shouldn't, which got me to thinking which director and studio would make the best warhammer movie, which is the nature of the question.

Secondly, if your nuanced in the Warhammer universes which version would be the better material to work wit, and if your nerd levels hit the event horizon, which army do you think would be the best focal point of the movie (hint: its not the smurfs)

Peter Jackson maybe, he has shown with LOTR that he can adapt source material very well, and is sympathetic to the current fandom and their expectations, rather than Michael "It's just a toy range" Bay.

Or the Watchowski Brothers, they are very good with action sequences, if a little too dependant on slow-mo bullet time, but they have also shown to be very intelligent in their scripts (Matrix 1, V for Vendetta) I'm sure they would also attempt to be as sympathetic to the current universe as possible as well.

I don't know enough about warhammer to understand different versions, but through osmosis on this site have quite a firm grounding in it anyway, I would say it would be interesting to have the movie from the point of view of one of the non-human races, as having a space marine movie seriously runs the risk of being too similar to starship troopers, and will be compared to it by everyone regardless. Maybe the Orcs, but it would have to be heavy in humour for that to work. Or the Tau or Eldar. At some point late in the movie they could meet and fight a human army, so you find your loyalties cut between the race you have been following and bonding with, and the sudden realisation that there are humans out there who are this races enemies. It might work.

People may disagree, but one man who knows how to do incredible badass sci-fi spectacle.

James Cameron?

I want to see a movie from an Eldar perspective. I know they're often used as a framing device in stories but it works well. You can follow the Eldar in the past as they imprison something (Necrons or Chaos), then flash forward to them at the low ebb of their power but still guarding it, cue humans appearing in the system.

The Eldar do their best to stop them by using Orks and other cat's paws. Evil released. Cue apocalyptic event and resolution.

I realise I've just described one of the majorly overused plots in the 40k universe but I still want to see it as a movie.

I don't really know enough about directors to suggest a good candidate.

James Cameron would be good as long as he doesn't cram in any of his personal beliefs on current societal or environmental issues.

Peter Jackson would also be a good candidate as he has the resources to make some real flashy effects and great character design.

One thing though is that whoever does, if ever, make a 40K movie they need to sit down and read through some lore/fluff to get a good idea of what the universe contains and how everything works.

Okay I am not a fan of 40K at all (nothing against it, I'm just ambivalent). However I have friends that are/were and from what I have heard and read about the universe there is not reason to make a movie. It should be a 10 or 12 episode tv series (HBO or showtime sort of thing) with a complete story taking place in the first season (if it gets renewed the next season would be a differnt story entirely with, perhaps different characters).

Anyway, if there was to be a film, I would say this: Guillermo del Toro. (watch Hellboy 2: The Golden Army see how good he is at making over-the top creatures and characters fun to watch rather than cheesy or overblown).

Couldn't agree more. Perhaps Neil Blomkampf (sp?) of District 9 fame? He knows his cool sci-fi and could pull off the cooler societal issues in the 40k universe.

Actually you know what? I want to see a film based on the "Horus Heresy" books (set in 30k).

Film One (build up, scene setting and foreshadowing-books one and two and some of three), Film Two (Horus falls, worlds burn, Istvaan purge & drop site massacre), Film Three (Side stories woven into a narrative leading up to the climactic end of the film where Horus despairs during his very moment of victory and pays for it). Throughout the films several characters try to stop the events and predict the sad future.

Flash forward to a bitter ending where it's the hell-ish situation it is in 40k.

This would be perfect as the Horus Heresy time is the location for the majority of the most moving/dramatic parts of 40k lore like the sacrifice of the Alpha Legion (the most loyal loyalists going traitor), the Thousand Sons, brother versus brother, etc.

In fact... Games Workshop, are you listening? Take my money and make this.

I don't know who would do it well, but 40K would probably make a better movie.

As for the actual actual movie, it would almost HAVE to be about the Imperium, and I think it would inevitably have to be either the Imperial Guard (Last Stand/Heroic Death Movie) or the Inquisition (Either the ultimate anti-hero movie (Exterminatus!) or a story of a man destroyed by his holy quest (Eisenhorn. Oh, please Hollywood, make this happen. I'll totally have sex with you if you make this happen).

...

Seriously, Hollywood. Butt Secks and everything.

40K 40K 40K 40K 40K 40K 40K 40K 40K.

In case you didn't catch it, Warhammer 40K. There's nothing else like it.

And I wouldn't mind at all if the movie focused on the SPESS MEHRENS, as long as it was honest, and showed their xenophobic fanatical dogma as well as their heroism, courage & loyalty.

Michael Bay would certainly make the film look good, but I'm pretty sure there are other directors that can do that "and" give it a good plot as well.

The Wachowski brothers are probably a good choice. Maybe Christopher Nolan? I can't really see it, but the man can do no wrong, so I'm sure he'd think of something.

Great idea but I think if there is a movie(about the Imperium) they should use an unknown chapter like they did with the Dawn of War series Space Marine chapter, make the main plot follow the book but from the perspective that the books or Codex's don't show (minimising Fan disappointment of "My Chapter wasn't used and it's cooler")

or we could just have a movie about the Grey Knights or Vindicators???

OT: Peter Jackson seems like a good choice but Michel Bay does seem to have a military fetish so he might work for a Guard Movie.

I'd go with the 40k universe, as the premise will bring in the action crowd but the universe allows for some truly interesting stories to be told.

You could always follow a Marine/Guard unit sent on a doomed voyage and follow their plight. It'd be interesting to watch their undying loyalty be tested as their fellow troopers are brutally slayed all for a cause that is largely unimportant.

If you wanted to look towards the extended universe/fiction, I'd recommend either Fifteen Hours (it's about a new guardsman sent to a planet/battle where the expected lifetime for a newbie is 15 hours) or Gaunt's Ghosts. Both would allow for mainstream acceptance as well as a decent exploration of the lore.

I'd have Alfonso Cauron direct either of those.

Edit: If they did do a fantasy based one, I'd love to see a horror/action/adventure film about a doomed voyage into Lizardmen territory. Think Aguirre meets Aliens.
