Who says they aren't still focusing on local multiplayer?
Heck, one of the (potentially sillier) moments in that trailer they were showing off was local portable multiplayer.

I get the feeling that they're quite focused on couch/bench/picnic table multiplayer.

I like the idea of Switch. Back in the 6th gen's heyday I would've loved it. Now I don't have that bunch of friends anymore, but I have a decent PC with an endless backlog of games.

Seeing that most people don't consider Nintendo games as AAA at all, that Vita argument is irrelevant. If the 3DS is an anomaly, then it's Nintendo's second anomaly in a row (the previous being the original DS). If they get next Monster Hunter there, it'll be a guaranteed success in Japan.

Me apparently. Specifically the promise of uniting the portable and home console libraries. I already have a nice PC so that makes a huge portion of the PS4 and X1 libraries pointless for me and Nintendo has the best 1st party offering especially if that will include both larger scale AAA titles and what would be the smaller portable titles. Which would ideally prevent some of the software drought in the likely event 3rd party support drops off again. If we could get say $60 3D Mario/Zelda type stuff in the Fall/Winter with ~$40 Side scrolling Mario/Top down Zelda to make it through Spring/Summer I think that would go a long way.

It all depends on whether they actually deliver on that potential at a solid price.

Portability and other features are frankly just a bonus for me.

Hasn't the PS Vita confirmed enough that people are not interested in playing AAA games on the go?
No, not really. The Vita has proven that people don't feel the library is worth the cost of the Vita plus overpriced memory cards.

Who is going to carry a bulky, extra handheld device along with their phone.
People who currently carry a 3DS XL and/or a Vita.

Nintendo has failed to realise the market has split in half AAA gaming belongs at home and casual gaming is for on the move.
No, people are fine with AAA gaming (whatever the fuck that means) on the go. It's just that up till now the only option for anything close to that was the Vita and it had problems that Nintendo handhelds don't have. The library isn't as good as the 3DS library, Sony kinda gave up on the Vita early on and those damn memory cards are a hidden but mandatory cost. The Switch isn't perfect but AAA gaming isn't one of it's flaws.

The 3DS was an anomaly
Yes it was, it sold far less than the Nintendo handhelds before it. Here are the numbers for NA. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-09-26-nintendo-hardware-sales-in-the-americas-are-worse-than-youd-expect

44.06m -GB/C
41.64m -GBA/SP
59.93m -NDS Family
20.11m -3DS Family

As you can see the 3DS, while still doing well in my opinion is the least successful handheld they have had and I think that's due to smartphones. Still, Nintendo can't abandon portable hardware, it sells better than home hardware.

The thing is with portable gaming the better the graphics gets the more pointless it becomes, it like laying the most beautiful, expensive carpet in the world in your wardrobe.
I don't care about great graphics on handheld games and indeed, my eyesight leaves me unable to play games at high resolution with tiny text like New Little Kings Story on the Vita (can't be played on PS TV either). I could wear reading glasses but I would rather not and I won't for more than a few minutes at a time. With all that in mind, I would normally agree with this quote except in the case of the Switch, the graphics are not going to waste as they can be viewed on a television.

Naturally, I don't want tiny text on a Switch game either but the graphics quality isn't wasted.

That wasn't the Problem, the PSP did amazing and that was pretty much AAA on the go. Sony sent the VITA out to die in the Americas. There isn't any software for it and it has nurtured backwards compatibility. I didn't buy a VITA because not all of the digital games I bought on PSP worked for it, it had a new proprietary memory card and they got rid of UMD. The 3DS had complete backwards compatibility, and they used SD Cards for memory. Yes the VITA has JRPG's, people bought the PSP because of GTA on the go. If COD on the VITA wasn't trash it would've done numbers and probably beat the 3DS.

Nintendo just needs to bring the software, that is why the Wii U was DOA, as a Wii U owner the only game I felt needed the tablet, was Xenobalde Chronicles X. It made that game much better.

Wrong. You can't leave the room with it. The gamepad has maybe 15 feet range, unobstructed.

I said this in another thread and the Switch doesn't seem like it's designed with an adult audience in mind, just like the WiiU.

The WiiU's touch screen controller was great for when your dad wants to use the TV to watch sports and doesn't let you play video games on it. You can just turn on your WiiU and leave the room with the controller while playing on the second screen!

...Except that I'm an adult, own my own TV in my own living room, and don't have to worry about people kicking me off my TV. I don't need a portable second screen because I have A FUCK OFF BIG TV SCREEN all to myself. Now Nintendo seems to be doubling down on that.

except, that your dad lived in another time. nowaday parents usually sacrifice their needs for the needs of their kids. i'm the mom, i should be in charge right ? right ? except i'm not. if my kids are outside playing, i'll be with them, not inside gaming. when they are inside if they play, i usually play with them. and if we are near the tv, 99% of the time, we let them choose what they want to watch. So what i do ? i'm going in another room with a tv to play or i stay with them ? and if i want to play, and that i can play in the same room as my kids while they are watching a movie without using the tv, it's a blessing for me.

i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one that a couple of parents that are gamers will want to switch for that reason.

Parents, kids, the Japanese and fans. Boom, done. Regardless of what Nintendo wants to believe every "hardcore gamer" already has either a PS4, an Xbox One or decent PC. I'm expecting about 25-35 million in sales.
