Want your opinion heard? Have questions for the staff? Now's your chance!

Every week, from Wednesday through Friday, staff will be dropping in and out of the thread to post responses to the question below and reply to yours. From there, feel free to keep the discussion going until next Wednesday when a new topic goes up. We may even respond over the weekend while we're playing Flock.

Consider this your chance to join us in some lively debating and hopefully good times. We can't wait to discuss.

This week's question is: Who is your favorite obscure, alternative or just plain unlikely videogame mascot?

His time in the spotlight has finally arrived:

James Pond: Underwater Agent. With level titles like a view to spill and solid platforming mechanics, this secret agent of a fish was criminally overlooked during the height of the Mario vs. Sonic Craze.

On a more serious note I'd have to say that someone like Alyx from Half Life 2 has kind of become a gaming mascot for a new, more mature generation videogames.

I don't think they're exactly mascot material... but I'd say Benjamin and Anthony Carmine from the Gears of War series.

They're like gamers that actually have the chance to be in the game, and perform about as well as I imagine the average gamer would in such a situation.

I nominate Zeke, from Zombie ate my Neighbours, he was the 3D glasses wearing kid in an insanely tense top down shooter, frantic survival run and gun horror was the dish of the night, and it was sweet.

the game is hugely popular to those who have been graced by its presence, sadly not known to the majority, which is a pity for both the game... and the players.

Zeke is from the 16bit era of avatars that dont talk, so its your own personality that you project onto him, for that and for me, he's a kick ass guy.

Everything about James Pond is awesome, James Pond 2 Robocop was the birth of in your face gaming satire, James Pond 3 is the greatest 2d platform game ever created, its like it had a physics engine.

The Ring Soul from the Shadow Hearts games...

Basically The Ring Soul is a strange "thing" that gives you bonuses to your "Judgement Ring" but oddly enough yields some of the strangest and funniest dialogue in a series chock full of hilarious one liners.

Not bad for a glorified tutorial system.

Glover from Glover 64.
He rolled around on a magic ball he could transform at will, plus from what I remember that game was difficult as balls (pun intended).

Mr. Saturn, who, from what I understand, is actually a mascot, or at least is mascot-like, however, not enough people have played the "Mother" games.

I think my avatar answers this question itself. Jack Frost from SMT is just irresistibly adorable.

Also, just about any Seiken Densetsu (Mana) mascots. Again, mostly for the adorable factor.

Sir Daniel Fortesque.
He's an undead knight with only one eye and a missing lower jaw! What more could you want?

The ball from Glover. Carrying around that stupid ball the whole damn game only brings back memories of frustration, but for some reason that ball also has some type of charm.

Oh, I've got another one! Well two to be exact...

Viki and Jeane from the Suikoden Series, these two have appeared in EVERY SINGLE INCARNATION of the main series. They're sort of the unnofficial mascots of the series, since they're one of the only constants in it.

Viki is a narcoleptic, sneeze prone expert of teleportation magic. She's the only character in the series who has experienced the games in proper Numerical Order and finds it odd when she runs into characters she has met in her past but in their future.

Jeane is a seemingly immortal Rune Mistress with a wry sense of humor. She has no back story and is ever mysterious.

And he can use his arm as a melee weapon (and I don´t mean using fists).

Most of these obscure/alternative characters come from older, NES era games, and from that particular mist of time I´d like to pick Lolo. I mean, what exactly is he/it? He/it falls into the same category of mascots as Pac-man, Kirby and those two little dragons from Bubble Bobble: Simple, round things that eat other things or shoot things from their mouth. How quaint is that.

EDIT: Said mascots aren´t really alternative or obscure (unknown), but weird they are nonetheless.

Your prince would like to say hello.

Also, I've got the Bubble Bobble theme planted deep in my brain now... good times.

Hey, I remember that guy. He had a game on virtual boy.

I gotta go with Abe from the Oddworld series, just because he's so unconventional. A fascinatingly ugly alien with stitched up lips with no true way to defend himself. And he farts.

He not exactly a mascot, but I've always loved Faust from the Guilty Gear series. He's just so likeable(I think) and cartoony. I've always associated him with that particular series.
