Who plays this garbage?

I've been noticing a lot of adverts around this site for MMO's that look, for want of a better word, shitty. This brings me back to that distant time when the internet was festooned with banner ads for Evony, and raises an all-important question:

Are there any sad-sacks who will actually click on one of these ads and get engrossed in a magical world created by Taiwanese gangsters/perverts? I presume these wondrous realms need subscribers to stay afloat, but I'm having a hard time trying to imagine the kind of person who's life has reached a nadir where playing one of these things seems like a good idea.

Any insight to offer?

Depends on what you mean by "shitty". If maps consist of nothing but grid references, no animation of any kind...well, the game can still be good. TDZK, (sp?) comes to mind. If it's based around dealing with other players...well, the forums here have less sophisticated combat, and no banking system.

If you mean "shitty" as in the game revolves around you becoming the greatest pimp by recruiting drug addicts as sex slaves you get points for abusing, starting with your little sister[footnote]I found one of those after I googled one of my other usernames, turned out the creator used it as well :([/footnote]...yeah, there is a large amount of "WTF is wrong with you"?

I've never tried one of them, so I'm going purely by the adverts.
You know the type, though; bad flash animation, derivative fantasy setting, sloppily-drawn animé characters. The one I'm looking at now is called 'Adventure Quest', and it purports to have 300+ monsters.

Ah, right. Though, if the gameplay is alright, that's not so important.

In any case, it's the community that matters for MMOs, right? Maybe they spend all time discussing what would happen if the last monster they killed became President of Trinidad and Tobago.

First of all, Adventure Quest is pretty awesome. Second, I'm looking at two different ones right now: "Shakes and Fidget", which proudly proclaims "Finally fantasy gets funny!" These people have obviously never heard of Terry Pratchett. The other one is Travian, which I understand is quite popular, though I'm annoyed by the hundreds of popups that I get from it on sites where I have my blocker turned on (so not here).

Adventure quest is actually a fun game at times. I used to spend a fair bit of time on it.

OT:Yeah I see a lot of games advertised that are basically interactive but still bad porn.

Adventure Quest was actually quite popular back in my high school days (2001-04). Lots of students blew off their computer class assignments because they were too busy fighting various frogzards. Gameplay is pretty basic (one-on-one random encounters, various elemental strengths/weaknesses), but it's managed to survive thanks mostly to consistent updates. Personally it's not really my cup of tea, as I tend to get bored after a few battles.

The OP is wise to be wary, as the majority of subscription run browser games are uninspired knock-offs at best and spyware-laden booby traps at worst (literal "booby" traps in Evony Online's case). The subject matter for some of these games can get downright disturbing as well. I remember stumbling across an ad once (it wasn't on this site) for some sort of "exploration and trade" browser game set in the 1700's. Players could supposedly trade "goods" back and forth to earn a profit. Why was it so disgusting? Well, it probably had something to do with the background image:
That's right, it was a game about the European slave trade, and the slaves were the "goods." I felt unclean just looking at the ad.

Until Terry Pratchett licences a Discworld MMO, your argument is invalid.

...Would a Discworld MMO be any good?

My argument was simply that they claim that fantasy as a genre has never been funny.

Well, the other day when I was on here, there was a banner advertisement for World of Warcraft, stating you could play for free up to level 20. I guess it is a shitty MMO though.

I played "Perfect world international" For about 4 months. Had an alright community.

If the game is bringing in enough money to have ads, it can't be that shit.
Just lettin ya know, there is an ad for LoL benith me. I don't play it, but if you called that garbage you would have a lot of unhappy players complaining.

I could be wrong, but wasn't there an article on the site recently about this appearing, and it was actually to raise awareness for something completely unrelated? I'm not sure it's a real game.

Maybe you should play the games before you just decide there a piece of crap, even if most of them are.

They're not any more odd or in that case "shitty" than your average small studio game, you know, like those indie games. Not all indie games were Braid either.

All I'll say, is if you want to lose more faith in humanity, go read up on the evolution of Evony's banner ads, the rapid descent from 'Be a mighty hero' to 'Look! TITS!' in desperation to guide horny teen eyes to the adverts.

Anything like that I instantly think 'spyware/keylogger/virus'. (Not all web games, only the ones trying too hard to get noticed).

Adventure Quest has been around for ALOT of years by now, made by non-professionals and came from very far to the point where they are now. It's commendable and it's a game that you sometimes play in between for a while, then put it down again untill you pick it up again.

Sorry if I am one of those Sad Sacks, but meh, it's passing the time and cheaper then WoW (as its free to play with limited content)
