With Lucas retired who should direct the first Disney Star Wars movie? Given the success Christopher Nolan had with bringing the Batman films back from the dead I'd like to see him give it a go. There's also a couple of directors who did films for Marvel who I'd like.

Given his past experience with both sci-fi and good characterisation, I'd hope Micheal Bay would get the helm.

Not Micheal Bay... his movies have ruined more childhoods then a man offering free candy from his van.

Quite seriously, I don't know enough directors to really say, just not Lucas please!

Maybe J.J. Abrams could have a crack at it.

Hell, he did Star Trek and look how that turned out, and the guy hates that franchise.

Joss Whedon might do a good too.

Nobody?

Star Wars was so close to death too D: Now we have to ignore it even longer, all cause Mickey Mouse couldn't keep his dick out of this pudding... Perhaps renewed interest could spark a Battlefront 3, but is it really worth it?

Peter Jackson would be my first pick.
Chris Nolan would be my second pick.
Guillermo del Toro would be my third pick.
Kenneth Branagh would be my fourth pick.

Michael Bay would be my absolute last pick. I might pick Uwe Boll before Bay; at least Boll would err on the side of weird rather than the side of EXPLOSIONS!

I think Joss Whedon would be a good pick. Another few directors I would like to see be chosen are Peter Jackson, Zack Snyder, Kevin Smith, or Christopher Nolan.

Ugh, please no Christopher Nolan. He doesn't have that sense of magic that is needed for Star Wars. He's too into dark and gritty for that. Likewise, Joss Whedon's style is too snarky for it.

My top picks, in order, are Steven Spielberg, Garth Jennings (the director of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxe movie), and Guillermo del Toro.

Garth Jennings may need a bit of explanation: that movie was the best example of a living, breathing alien world (universe, really) I've ever seen on film. del Toro's films are second only to H2G2 in that department. Steven Spielberg, well, he's good at getting that magical feeling that Star Wars needs. If Jim Henson were still alive, he'd also be on the list, since he did both the magic and the living world. Heck, Jim Henson studios did the creature effects for H2G2, although Henson himself had been dead for decades by the time the movie was made.

Joss Whedon. He knows how to work with a complex scifi universe with complex and interesting characters.

Besides he did a great job in directing Disney's The Avengers so he can do a big budget movie and contacts between him and Disney are already there.

Agreed on Nolan, not sure why people would say him. I disagree on Wheedon, though. Personally, I think his snark level close enough to the level of Episode 4 to be a plausible successor.

I'd love to see Peter Jackson bring his love for epic-scale movies to the Star Wars franchise. It'd be like Star Wars Battlefront...but SUUUPERCHAAAARGE IT.

Nolan? Seriously guys? There could not be any worse a choice....

I imagine it being in stable at Disney they might give Joss a crack at it (assuming he's not busy trying to live up to the Avengers) but after that... Del Toro might be good. Spielberg certainly knows his way around a film.

I think a more important question would be who they're getting to write it. It's sorta important....

Well let's see, there's George Lucas, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, and I suppose Joss. BUT, someone has to tell him to leave the "in space" sounds in. That laser "pew" is iconic. Then there's whoever directed Dexter. That show is AMAZING.
Oh, or Bioware, SWTOR got that perfect feel to it.

Star Wars with ultraviolence and thinly veiled political satire? I could get behind that.

Someone above said J.J Abrams. As Harry. S. Plinkett said: J.J Abrams should have directed the Prequels, and George Lucas should have directed people to their seats.

My first thought when I heard this news was gee, that sucks. My second thought was that if they do make more movies, they should get Guillermo del Toro to direct it. I mean, I know he likes working with nonhuman characters, and monsters, not to mention he is a damn fine director anyway. I think he would be percet. Baring that, it just depends on how they are doing it.
