Lets say Matt Smith decides to retire as the Eleventh Doctor tommorrow. You and Stephen Moffat (or someone new, this threads not about him) are at the table deciding who the next Doctor will be played by. Who do you choose and why?

He's a phenomenal actor, see the Wire, Luther and his brief role in Thor. I think he'd be a different change of pace to the last two Doctors we've had Tennant and Smith who've both been kind of manic and weird (more obvious in Smith). A bit more like Eccleston or Mccoy, a more subtle character, where the humour is more cynical and sarcastic. Perhaps with a brusque no-nonsense hands on approach like Jon Pertwee. I like to see how he'd handle any racism (being the first black Doctor), would he be oblivious, would he address it via dialogue or with some sort of variant of the psychic headbutt (enlightenment punch?).

Also for bonus points the villain of the series would be the Valeyard played by Bendict Cumberbatch.

Well first off it would not be me and Moffat. I would get rid of that hack and get someone decent.

My pick: Kevin McKidd [http://www.buzzine.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/McKidd3_100208_350w.jpg].
My first [footnote]Well not first as I did catch occasional eps as a kid but never got into the old series.[/footnote] and favourite Doctor was Eccleston. I really enjoyed that he tried to be funny and happy at times but you could see he was really fucked up. He was someone who exterminated his entire race. He was a killer and was torn up about it but was trying to move on. But when he got angry he did rage well.
So I would try to bring some of that back to the role instead of having a goofy haired clownshoe.

McKidd has the serious talent as he displayed in Rome and he was pretty damn cool in Bunraku so yeah.

However if I were to go the silly route then probably Matthew Lillard [http://boxofficeboredom.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/b_17442.jpg]. A fantastic actor who has just never made it big.

I would like to see an older doctor again. The problem is. Would they want to cast someone who most likely is going to demand to be very highly paid.

Lets get someone like John Cleese to be the doctor.

This guy, He looks a bit like Tennant, but, has enough flair to be a who.

I remember him as Boris from goldeneye

I wouldn't mind seeing James AND Oliver Phelps play the next Doctor(s). I'm not greatly fussy on the reason for there being two of them, I'd just like to see it. I wouldn't want them to play the Doctor(s) like they played the Weasley twins however, who were a little bit too close to Tennant/Smith in terms of the Doctor's personality. I'd like to see them play it more serious.

I don't know too many actors. The only ones I do know are unsuitable. Like Russell Crowe.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, and I don't see it ever happening, but I remember reading somewhere that a Time Lord could become a Time Lady through suicide. Obvious problems present themselves here, but it could be interesting.

One of the more recent episodes "The Doctors Wife" suggests that timelords could swap gender if they want. Though they probably stick to their original sex out of tradition. It would make for an interesting change at the least, if not necessarily succesful or well received.

I can't think of any appropiate actresses for the part, but seeing the Doctor regenerate into a Time Lady would open up a whole lot of hilarity, Although I suppose it did sort of happen once:

Hmm, I suppose you could cast Robert Pattinson for the role.

See what I did there?

Okay, I'll go away now.

I would really like a female Doctor, but I dont see it happening, sadly.

An older Doctor would also be okay. Getting tired of everyone fancying the Doctor.
Worked with David Tennant, but Matt Smith is not really attractive.

Well obvious answer would be Benedict Cumberbatch. He's a fan of the show and was rumoured to be the doctor before Matt Smith got the part. Though now he is known as Sherlock I wonder if that would stop people seeing him as a potential doctor.

For a little bit of a curveball I'd also suggest Dev Patel, for no other reason than he does have some range as an actor (compare his role in skins and Slumdog billionaire) and also I quite like him. Maybe a little on the young side, but then the doctor's do seem to get younger and younger.

I'm not sure who I'd cast. Whenever they cast the doctor they usually cast some mainly unkown actor, and he makes the part his own.

Though I would like to see John DeLancie play an evil time lord (maybe the new regeneration of the Master?). Though this is scuppered by him already playing a CIA boss in Torchwood (and he's not coming back).

A true Doctor Who fan fancies the Doctor no matter his incarnation.

Aww yeah. I'd hit that ;)

Or maybe it's because I've got a thing for the eighth.

James Nesbitt could be interesting.

I think an older, more serious and more mature doctor, with the potential for some maniacal glee like Christopher Eccleston is what's needed after Matt Smith and Moffat's...playful series.

Benedict Cumberbatch would be a good doctor but he's already turned it down once so I really can't see him wanting to now all of a sudden. Burn Gorman would be a more realistic pick. Richard Armitage and/or James Nesbit would do well in the role too I imagine. If Im going to pick an older Doctor I'd have to go with either Kieth Allen although I'd REALLY like to see Stephen Fry or Michael Gambon if I could pick anyone.

My idea for the Twelfth Doctor was Colin Morgan, the lead character in Merlin. He's relatively young but give it a couple of years and I think he'd be perfect for the role. What would be really fantastic if they gave him a sort of old man attitude, like the First Doctor, as a juxtaposition to his youthful appearance =)

Yes Yes Yes!

I wanted him already as the 11th one due to his performance in Jekyll and for the same reasons, being that he could be an older, more serious Doctor while still being able to be gleefully mad.
It also helps that Jekyll was by Moffat sooo...maybe this time?

I'd love to see a female Doctor next, I'm just not very good with actresses so if anyone else can recommend a suitable actress, bring it on!
