While reading some of the threads on this sight, I've come across many post saying something along the lines of "Those(Insert profanity of choice) squeaky-voiced, obnoxious 13 year old(Insert derogatory name, plural). In my years at middle school, most peoples voice had already dropped, and had lost their habits of typing in all caps and crying. In fact, many of the 8 and 9 year old children whom we had to help do school projects said that they were 13 or 14 on the accounts that they made online or whatever console their rich parents bought them. I am asking you Escapists how many of you actually believe 14 year olds have voices 4 octaves above a high C, and how many of you really hate them.

Edit: Perhaps it was because of the school I went to. I seem to have encountered a different species then all of you.

Man, I was the nicest damn 14 year old on the internet I've ever seen. But yeah, It's called stereotyping and it's terrible, but no one really does anything about it.

Maturity over Age. I don't care about what age someone is as long as their not total morons, in which case if they disagree with me they dish out the whole "gf kid".
A) 19 isn't a kid
B) I'll assume they're a kid if they say that as a retaliation of their idea of self defence on the internet.

I would, but I too am 13, so I'd be technically hating myself. So for the time being, I don't hate teenagers.

It's due to the fact that the most prominate retards are indeed around the age of 14.

And thus we generalise, don't worry you'll get over it. I'm 15 dammit I've lived through the generalization :p

Also, just to throw out there my voice got very low when I was 12, so I've never had the voice insult thrown my way, everyone assumed I was 30 or something from which in the end works out well.

I think 12 is more stereotypically annoying than 14, but that's nitpicky. I'm okay with them as long as they aren't dicks, I don't mind squeaky.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I resent 13 year olds only in the context of M-rated games. I think they're too young to be playing violent games like that, regardless of what they think about their own maturity level. Guess I'm just old fashioned like that.

On a more political level, they're making it much easier for the gaming industry as a whole to catch flak from talking heads and overzealous lawyers. It'd be a lot harder to claim that "violent videogames corrupt children" if children weren't playing the violent videogames in the first place.

OP-If you're talking about all those little squeaky voiced children that make up the vast majority of XBLA and essentially ruin it with their immaturity and profanity, then yes I hate them. I think you should have to be 18+ to play video games online, no exceptions.

I only dislike people who's age<15 when I find them playing games with a 15+ rating. For instance almost all the online multiplayer FPS games.

If youy have ever played a game online against one of those little fucks who think they are "the shit" and swear like hell cause there mommy isn't around, you will see where the steotype comes from. However it has been pinned on 14 year olds even though many are younger.

It's never actually 14 year olds you're thinking of. Unless they're going on about porn and crap, because in that case they probably are.

Most the squeaky, annoying, spamming idiots are 10 or 11. Although I have seen 7-9 year olds too. And that's a whole different level of irritation.

To answer the question in your title: Fourteen year olds are generally in grade nine. Everyone hates grade nines. It's a known fact. If you don't believe me, walk among the halls of any high school for an hour and you will be sure to hear at least once someone complaining about grade nines.

This is generally because they are so damned obnoxious because they think that by being in high school they're important now. They've also failed to realize this is not the case.

Yes, fourteen year olds don't all generally have extremely high-pitched voices, but they generally still lack the deep manly-man voice of a man. Thus, everyone can tell they're still not very old yet, and assume that these fourteen year olds will be as obnoxious or annoying as the fourteen year olds from past experiences.

I, for one, don't hate fourteen year olds/young children in general, per se...
I am just very wary of them, as I have seen too many of them being extremely annoyingly obnoxious. It probably doesn't help that I don't like children either, and fourteen year olds/other ages of children are still children, no matter what they try to tell you.
Until they have managed to find experience and can hold intelligent conversations, they are still considered children in my books.
But, I'm not saying that all fourteen year olds can't hold intelligent conversations.
No. Just most of them.
If you're one of the few who can, congratulations. You're going to be generalized for quite a few more years yet, then, and you will hate it.

...And four octaves above a high C is generally impossible to hear, thus no one can have a voice that high.
But you probably knew that, seeing as you knew what high C is.

Well, I didn't have a mic until well after my voice deepened, but even had I had one, I would've seldom used it. My beef with the squeaky kids is only when they do not stop talking, and/or start trying to order everyone around. If they don't constantly talk into the mic and can hold their own in a game, there's no problem. But that rule applies to everyone.

I can usually tell the real teens from the liars -- young teenagers generally start trying to talk trash or talk back when you tell them to quiet down, and are infinitesimally more annoying as a result.
