I think that it is because the nature of interactivity makes timing very difficult.

But this isn't about my opinion, tell me, why are most all comedy games utter rubbish?

There has not been any game that has focused soley on comedy in my opinion, you can name a game, and it's not funny. Now there are games with funny moments, like in Mass Effect 2 when Mordin sings or thinks you're attracted to him.

Because you have no sense of humour? lol only joking :)

I don't know i've never really played a game which was dedicated to comedy just games with a few funny lines. But Conkers: Bad fur day was pretty funny :)

What do you mean by "comedy games" - can you give some examples?
The Futurama game, Postal, the Family Guy game, Leisure Suit Larry, (actually kinda decent until his recent misadventures) The Secret of Monkey Island, etc...

I've noticed that a few old-school comedy adventure games can be alright due to their focus on story above all else. Modern comedy games still remain rubbish, however.

I thought this game was funny. Just need to get around those pain in the ass puzzles though.

It is possible for a comedy game to be funny (Psyconauts), but it is very hard so very few make it right (Psyconauts (again))

I disagree with the premise.

Dark Waters left me cracking up almost constantly, as did Baldur's Gate 2 with a couple of mods installed.

Up until recently it has been very difficult to time virtual actors in a way that's genuinely funny. Camera movement was slow and jerky, each character had a very limited range of animations, it was pretty much impossible to have expressive characters. I think that as our technology improves we'll start to see some funnier games.

Latest funny game I've played is Brütal Legend and it wasn't the tons of cut scenes with Jack Black that made it that funny but the actual game play. Also try cartoon games, something about cartoon violence I find hilarious. Like for example TF2 or Battlefield Heroes. There was also a game for the old Xbox I found funny called Cel Damage, not that impressive in single mode but its crazy when you play with friends. :D

Edit: Also something really old, Grim Fandango for the PC. Not that interactive but theres some great humor in there.
Edit 2: Evil Genius. A strategy type PC game based around the old spy movies like James Bond with a funny style to it.

I'm confused. There haven't been many comedy games, and the ones that spring to mind were quite funny.

(Of course, that's most likely because the ones that weren't funny I don't remember well)

Monkey Island, Leisure Suite Larry, Conker's Bad Fur Day, the aforementioned Psychonauts and Neverhood, Portal...

Well yes, there are a few good examples of comedy games out there, but I find most of them to be more likely to inspire giggles than true laughs.

While Psychonauts is quite good it would be a bit far-fetched for me to compare its comedic value to say... Cheech & Chong's Up in Smoke or a good George Carlin stand-up act.

The purpose of this thread is to establish why most comedy games, as pieces of comedy, range from utter rubbish to just-above-standard.

I've actually wondered this myself. As a fan of comedy Shoujo anime like Clannad and The Melancholy of Haruhi, I've often wondered if there were any games beyond the typical uber-cheap Japanese dating sims. I think the thing with Comedy is that its all based on the delivery and is almost always tied in some way to dialogue or specific situations, both of which are somewhat questionable areas for video games: too much dialogue and people complain about the amount of it, and too many specific situations would require more cut scenes, causing people to declare a lack of actual GAMEPLAY. For example, look at Heavy Rain and Final Fantasy XIII. Both games are heavy on story and cut scenes, sacrificing traditional game play for heightened story experiences. The complaints those two games received are indicative of what reception would be like for a comedy styled game that didnt walk a fine line between setting up the gags and having great gameplay elements.

The closest to comedy games I can think of that worked were usually of the "Adventure" game ilk, most notably the heyday of Lucas arts point and clicks.. Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, Monkey Island... a few newer entries like Strong Bad and Psychonauts have done great things, but if you want comedy you need a way to present a story and deeper character development than most games are willing to provide. Battlefield Bad Company one and two had some pretty good comedic elements, but were mostly built on their solid FPS gameplay.

But the day someone combines a game like Heavy Rain with the comedic gold that was Excel Saga, will be the day that I become a devoted fan to that game studio.

So...I guess then, a 'comedy' game is any game where focus in put on the humor. Hmm, some good mentions put in so far, I'd like to add Z-Steel Soldiers and Lucasart's Armed & Dangerous to the mix, the former an RTS filled with drunken omnicidal robots and the latter a kind of odd Monty Pythonesque/Mel Brookesqe third person shooter which, while sounds completely terribad, was actually pretty damn good.

Wellll, with Excel Saga, you more or less have a deconstruction of genres in every episode. So, the gameplay would have to rapidly shift to cover those various aspects in such a way to preserve part of what made that series so funny as well as the spirit of the show itself.

Something like have a couple FPS levels, then the camera zooms out to a couple people playing Risk or somesuch.

Damn, I forgot Armed & Dangerous. That was extremely funny.
