If you look at the 80's and 90's we had shows like GI joe, exo-squad, swat kats, etc. But now cartoons are almost always focused toward little kids and if you want a good cartoon series with action but also depth you have to look towards anime( japan is like the saudi arabia of action cartoons). So what happened? Did they just not make enough money or were there parents overly concerned about their kids seeing violent cartoons?

Times change, tastes change.

TransFormers: Prime has been pretty good.

Tastes change im afraid. Just like im not as partial to cgi animated movies as I am the old 2D ones, which are few and far between these days. Thats why I cling to the anime more now.

Because Legend of Korra isn't out yet, and so far The Clone Wars Season 4 has been mediocre. Hopefully, once the Umbara Arc begins next week the Clones will get back on track.

I couldn't say why but I do agree, my childhood consisted of TMNT Power Rangers (I know that's not a cartoon but what the hell) and Dragon Ball Z (which I still love to this day) I don't even know what the kids watch these days

It is amusing how the shows that DO become extremely popular tend to be the ones the creators do give a shit about, like The Last Airbender and Adventure Time, the latter being the most recent. Ben 10 grew a beard after the first series, though with the creator's death the recent episodes seem to have lost their luster. From the same group you also have Generator Rex which is pretty grim when you look at the big picture.

An important keynote here is that these shows are ALL new intellectual properties, not remakes of some old franchise or a total reboot.

*headscratch* You forgot FiM, which is extremely popular and kinda contradicts your last point.

Actually, it's the week after that, but yeah Season 4 has definitely been mediocre.

Anyway, nostalgia guy, you aren't even trying to find good shows are you? In addition to series that have already been mentioned have you seen Young Justice and ThunderCats (2011) currently running on Cartoon Network? Both are really good shows and far better than the drek of the 80's. Or how about any of these recent shows that are no longer on the air, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Sym-Bionic Titan, Wolverine and the X-Men, Justice League: Unlimited, Teen Titans, Transformers: Animated, G.I. Joe: Renegades, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

*sigh* Why do I ever bother? Honestly, there are a lot of great action cartoons on TV these days, but everyone keeps up the nostalgia. I'll say it now, the 80's cartoons were glorified toy commercials and Batman: The Animated Series was only good half the time...

Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Transformers Prime, Avatar, Young Justice, Thundercats, and even Ben 10.

They may be few & far between nowadays but good action cartoons do still exist.

Um, hello?
There's Transformers Prime, GI Joe: Renegades, ThunderCats, and the upcoming Avatar Legend of Kora.
PLUS, few that I'm not too crazy about but kids seem to love; Ben 10, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Generator Rex, and Young Justice.
And let's not forget the criminally short-lived, but still quite recent, Symbionic Titan.
Hell, even Adventure Time has action elements!

How can you say there's no more good action cartoons? You mustn't be looking very hard.

I still say that more people need to give The Clone Wars a look. At least the first two seasons.
