Why can't you open doors in games?

I have noticed in a lot of games, you can't open doors, but yet your squadmates can.
Why is this? Is your character afraid of doors? Is he physically too weak to open them?

Because a door is a very complex, hazardous object that takes years of intense training to open. Or at least, that's what I think.

You don't have the key to that door and your lock pick skill is not high enough. That's how I rationalize it.

Because my character isn't stupid. Odds are good that behind any given door there is going to be something trying to kill him. Why on earth would he want to be the first one through?

In which games can your squadmates open doors but you can't?

I'm being serious, I've yet to play a game where this is the case.

Call of Duty (and its subsequent bastard children from other companies). I hear that in the next one they're going to predetermine where all your bullets go so that its even more cinematic and cool.

Exactly. All main characters in games are terrified of doors. They think if they open the wrong one, they'll be sucked out into the real world and used as slaves by youtubers for comic effect.

Useless doors shown only for decoration in video games is my bitter pet peeve.

When I play a game, in the back of my head I just imagine that every door in the game world is so badly jammed that people have given up on using doors in general, and thus, most have gotten more jammed, which explains why you or your squad-mates can only go in certain doors.
(and thats why in open world games, everyone walks around instead of chilling at home)

I always thought it was your character knowing something behind it wanted to kill him because he saw what happened when one of his friends opened a door in another game and got killed in a funny yet brutal way so he let's his squad mates take all the risks while he sits back and relaxes while they take the initial hail of bullets/lazers/bombs or whatever comes at them.

I thought this thread was going to be about how opening doors typically involves standing in front of it, pressing the f key, and then it opens on its own.

Is it too much to ask to get a hand-opening-the-door animation?

Behind those unoppenable doors are the God items devs put in to games so they have unlimited ammo and can not be hurt.

The most obvious answer that make sense from a technicle point is, that if your unable to open a door or use an item or whatever but your squaddies can, is because its done as a scripted event designed with the purpose of grabbing your attention. alot of game have done this or somthing simular recently, a good example is in DNF right at the start you arnt allowed to continue untill the npcs move out of the way becasuse the developers want you to watch the tv in the game.
