Why didn't anyone created an sci fi space opera MMO that rivals WOW?

There have been those that have tried. However none have managed to match WoW in terms of scale and popularity.

Why has someone not created a sci fi MMO with spaceships, cool looking aliens, and cool futuristic technology that is just as popular and addictive as World of Warcraft? Is fantasy combat more fun?
Fantasy combat does lend itself a bit better to multiplayer games.

Check out EVE, it's not as popular as WoW (nothing is) but if you want an MMO with cool spaceships and tech, and maaaassssive fleet battles, EVE has them all.

There used to be a huge influx of new mmo's, around the time TBC was mid-way think. And up until the end of cataclysm or even well into Pandaria. Companies saw how huge a player base WoW was getting during WotLK and wanted to try and get in on that lucrative business. Age of conan, D&D online, DC universe online, SW:ToR, Neverwinter, LOTR online, Rift, Guild Wars 2, etc. Some tried to change things up to various degrees, but most or arguably all of them stuck to the basic formula. And all of them found out that there's just no way to beat WoW. It's just too big and established as THE mmo to play. And over the years it has gotten so much more content and has become so much better and more polished that any new mmo basically doesn't stand a chance in terms of popularity.

These days mmorpg's mostly come from from the eastern countries. Though they're mostly just boring grind-fests. Typical 'free to play' mmo's where you're 'highly encouraged' to buy multiple things from the store. The only time new mmo's will stand a chance is when WoW finally shuts down. Which is still a long while away considering how things are going. That is, unless Blizzard comes out with a new mmorpg to replace WoW at that time. Blizzard is so established in the mmo market that people will flock to their new mmorpg right away (me included most likely) when/if that happens.

SW:ToR is still up and running though as said before.

Better question, while Marvel and dc are making more money than God hand over fist with their super hero movies and TV shows

Why hasn't anyone created another super hero mmo after city of heroes closed down
DCUO is still up and running. It's a fairly good mmorpg too. Just not even close to what WoW has to offer.

Anyone here remember Defiance, that was run in parallel with the TV show of the same name? I thought that was pretty damn fun. Unfortunately, I think it's dead, because I'm pretty sure they cancelled the show. Maybe the game's still up, haven't played it in a long time.

One of only like two MMOs I ever really got that much into. The other being ACE Online, an air combat action MMO.

Anarchy Online. It's been online since 2001 and just had the open beta release for an updated engine.

One day i'm sure there will be a wow killer. What form it will take, i know not, but sci fi space opera setting gets my approval.

Wait, isn't this the OP that make random thread but does not comment back into it?
That description might apply to me :S
Hope it isn't a major faux pas, in those cases i feel thread is running its course fine and that my input is not really desired or needed.
