Why do all games have to be hardcore?

I love everyone bashing motion controls because you can't play hardcore games on them. I wondered when gaming became all about being hardcore?

Everytime I see someone post a comment about it not being hardcore enough I am always reminded of the "EXTREME" guys from Harold and Kumar.

Wierd, most people are complaining that games are becoming to casual nowadays. Have you seen the Wii?

I hate the "hardcore" and "casual" titles games get. It's fucking stupid, and frustrating beyond belief when people (especially here) make fun of the Wii for having no "hardcore" titles, when it has some of the best games of this generation, that are NOT casual games.
And the argument could be made that Mario is much more hardcore than any 360/PS3 game ever devised.

I think I know what you're saying, though I might be incorrect...

I think it's the product of putting a bunch of young "beta" males into a highly competitive online environment.

EDT: OOps, I thought you said "gamers"

Not everything used to be hardcore it's just our definitions have changed with the Wii opening gaming to people who normally don't play games.

As gamers we want games that will give us an amazing experience and so we demand more from games than others would that's why we want hardcore titles.

My problem isn't with Motion Controls, it's with the console they're on. The Wii has it's target market, and sold WELL because of it. Microsoft and Sony have since seen this, and decided they wanted a slice of Nintendo's glorious apple crumble. If I wanted to play "casual" titles, I'd play them on the Wii.

I see the PS3 and Xbox 360 as more serious consoles, and don't want to have to perform a rather peculiar dance to a camera just to open a fucking door! Let the Wii have it's damned market!

Personally I feel that consoles like the DS and the Wii with their mix of casual games and such bridge the gap to people who wouldn't otherwise be into gaming. Remember back in the early 90's on how the Gameboy was played by any age of any profession?

But this OP is right; games and their gamers are getting a lil' too demanding for hardcore as of late. I look back and find that lately it's becoming a lot harder for newcomers gamers (I refuse to use the word "noob" in any sense) to be introduced to the more serious consoles such as the PS3 and the 360, because of how alot of gamers (not all) can be a lil' unforgiving to those who don't perform "as well" in their eyes, especially during co-op games and such

motion controls suckj and are the oppisite of game immersion
Perhaps if your favourite game was added with motion control functionality as an option, you might enjoy it further, adding a bit more depth and immersion maybe? Just a thought

I see "Hardcore" games as games that are made to be played and enjoyed by people who actually play games as a hobby rather than "Casual" games that are made primarily using gimmicks to apeal to people who don't play games, such as pretty much most of the Wii stuff.

It's not fun to have motion controls as buttons work well enough for games whilst being enjoyable, and more immersive. Motion controls were introduced along with alot of "Casual" games as a 'Oh look were being different, buy our stuff' when most, if not all gamers beforehand didn't like it as they prefer buttons for various reasons.

As I have been playing through some Wii games (As I like Nintendo games) all I thought throughout playing is "I want real controls that work 100% and maybe better graphics instead of focusing mainly on motion controls" It's a reason I prefer my PC, I get good games that have been designed to be good games rather that poor or average games that where focusing on gimmicky controls.

They didn't. They started out that way. The trend is moving in the opposite direction, and the current state of gaming is mostly the opposite of what you describe.

As for why SOME games (not all of them) need to be hardcore, probably because most games today are not.

Luckily, I know the cure for most kinds of gaming-related disappointment today: stay away from consoles, and play on our PCs/Macs. There is a vast sea of shitty games for Windows and OS X, but at least you can still see the jewels among all the excrement...

games are not all about being hardcore, the trend is actually going in the opposite direction, casual games are on the rise and hardcore games are steadily decreasing. Just look at how successful farm-ville has become *shudders*

hardcore? You call games these days hardcore? I remember in my youth you'd get three lives to do a massive scrolling game, filled with traps and enemies, and no save points. No helpful little aimbots holding your dick so all you had to do was squeeze one off. The glory days of video games actually being difficult and rewarding are long gone.

being as ONE of my favorite games are the total series, it would be interesting to be able to move your units kind of like in the R.U.S.E. trailer as a way of adding to the game, but what motion controls are now are just gimmicks have little to no use and that's why i haven't cant be arsed to go back to my Wii.

But if a games not hardcore can I still chug my Mountain Dew and scream profanities into my head set? It's just not as fun to ruin someones game of Uno as it is to mess up their COD. Plus I might end up gaming with my mom if I have to play casual games... that would be awkward.

And people bitching aboout Kinect, I don't think anyone will force you to buy it. In fact if enough of us don't buy it it may dissappear as fast as the Virtual Gameboy/Retina Scorching Unit Nintendo inflicted upon the market back in the day. I sure as hell won't buy it unless it is rated as the greatest thing since sliced bread by the majority of gamers and the price drops.
