Why do people cheat online?

I still play Metal Gear Online, which is over 2 years old, and people still glitch. What's the point? The game has been out long enough for everyone to have plenty of reward points to buy anything in the shop and that would be the only reason to cheat. I could see cheating in the game's tournaments to get exclusive items but outside of that I don't get it.

I play online to compete against other players. And if I glitched, then I wouldn't be competing then. Do these glitchers actually think they are better than other players by glitching? Yeah, you killed me but if I was running around invisible or lag switching, I could kill you just as easy. To me, single player is the only place to cheat and even that gets boring after like 10 minutes.

I could see cheating in real sports (like using steroids) because there's a huge upside (getting lots of money, having great stats, winning championships, etc.) and there's a decent chance of nobody knowing you did cheat. But in a video game, what's the upside? Everyone knows you cheated and nobody is going to pay attention to your great stats because the game community is going to know you're a cheater. The Pros of every game know who's legit and who's not.

Therefore, all cheaters in online gaming have to be total assholes that I wouldn't give 1 iota of respect to in real life.

The upside is winning. And People like to win.
I don't often cheat in games. Mostly because I don't really know how to.
Anyways it's more fun to play normally anyways...

I cheat more often than I'd like, but only in singleplayer. Everything else is a no-go to me.

I too, do not understand online cheaters.

Single player cheating can be a lot of fun if you just want to break the gaming world for a while if you're bored or you genuinely need a little help to overcome a ridiculously hard obstacle.

However online, if you're playing with cheats, you're just not playing the game. You're giving yourself an artificial advantage that actual players cannot surpass.

I often compare it to playing Hide and Seek, but you make a special rule for yourself that means you can't be tagged. So you can just stand in plain sight, and still "win".

It's just not playing the game.

Why do people steal crap?

I mean, i suppose you could make up some scenario where someone had no choice, but just as often it's just a shortcut.

Offline, singleplayer cheating is okay for me. Dicking around with godmode and noclip in some HL2 singleplayer mods is brilliant. It also means I'm not involved in your massacre of 'dmgrecieve0 set to 1'.

Online, multiplayer cheating however is the cheapest tactic one can do. It means waving the staff around and taking out the actual fun out of 'online fun time' for everyone else.

I'd assume it's either a love of winning, which blinds them to the fact they are cheating to accomplish it or the much more logical reason (imo) of griefing.

I've on a rare occasions grieffed someone who I think has wronged me, and honestly I got a kick out of it, so I'm not surprised if a bunch of people go online to cheat to piss people like you and me off. Aside from those two I can't think of many reasons why someone would cheat online.

On-line gaming is all about trying to show other like minded people that you are the top of that particular food chain. People cheat to get superhuman scores in minimal time, which they think makes them look like gods amongst the community!

Take refuge in the fact that you see through this ploy, and remember that by playing fair, YOU are the better man!

Well depends what you define as cheating I don't know what the fuck people think glitching is nowadays on consoles as apparently glitches include various jumps in CoD. Getting to an normally inaccessible area is not that bad of a glitch if you didn't get shot on the way into that area you probably deserve some kills. Even at that you are fairly grounded and should be easy to kill from there.

I spec nade people in CoD who vorociously spawn kill by camping just outside of spawn so that the spawn does not switch. So I do it out of a twisted sense of justice. There are some people who cheat because they like to get big score then there are people who cheat because they like seeing people complain.

Some players place an inordinate amount of attention in being first in all the scoreboards, no matter what. These are the "ends justify the means" crowd who see winning as the be-all and end-all in life. They also tend to be either desperate for attention (whether it's good or bad) or have inflated egos who think they're above the rules. Since cheating in a video game is fairly easy and the possible consequences are relatively light (if you get banned, create a new account or move onto the next game), it's the ideal venue for these types of people.

Well the main goal of games is to win, to do so you need the upper hand, be that with skill, knowledge, or cheats.
Cheaters look for the easy advantage, while others gain that advantage through honing the required skill and mastering the tool set.
Added to that people will always look for the simplest solution, cheating being the simplest we will mostly go for that, so the first thing in a game should be to prevent cheating all together.

But winning Team Deathmatch #257,864 isn't at all noteworthy like say winning MVP is in a real sport. Hell, there would be an upside to cheating in like some official game tournament but there'd be no way people would not know you cheated and you would be disqualified.

And, Demon, awesome fucking avatar, "laser shield" lol, 30 Rock is great.

So you can get stuff without paying for it and people don't know who stole it. You get nothing by cheating online but meaningless stats and the chance of being banned.

Cheating/glitching is doing stuff that one normally can't do in the game with just a controller (like a lag switch) or exploiting a bug or glitch like going through a wall that you shouldn't be able to and killing people from an unkillable position. If the game allows you to get to some place that's just real tricky to get to then that's fine. I remember in CoD4, there was a point where everyone thought it was so cool to go on various roofs of overgrown, that's not glitching and those people were easy to kill anyways. It's up to the developers to make sure the game doesn't have any cheap tactics and whatnot; cheap does not equal glitching.

Can't actually remember the last time I cheated in a video game. Used to play around with god mode all the time on FPSs, but these days I tend to just finish the game and move on to the next.

But I guess some people have got to win, by any means possible. There's probably a deep psychological reason it's not their fault, but I think it's just because they're dicks.

While some of you are right about the winning part I'm sure more of it has to do with trololololololololol. Because god damn the cheaters I've run into aren't even trying to hide it. Spinning around at mach 9 with a LMG head shotting everyone on the board through anything, guys who headshot 100% of the time. Somehow they take 30 more bullets to kill.

It's got to do with trolling and knowing you're pissing someone off. That has to be a sizable chunk of it because fuck it pisses me off. And I can't see another reason for it.

Hell I don't even cheat in single player games this just makes no sense to me.

People just want to win or show they are "good".
That is my 2 cents anyhow.

Well, the only times Ive cheated online.. Lets see
Maplestory, I used a vacuum hack and just AFKed over night, I made a couple hundred dollars selling the accounts from that so there you have one reason, profit.
Counter-Strike: Source, I was lanning with a mate and we would go into servers, use every kind of hack imaginable and just laugh our asses off together at the rage. We'd also have little "Infected" kind of games were one person would be cheating on a free for all game and you had to figure out who was cheating, was good fun
World of Warcraft I botted, if you count that as cheating
Tibia I botted
GMOD I used a wallhack in a certain gametype but I only ever played that to grief the 12 year olds.
And last but not least I accidentally joined a prestige server on Black Ops and prestiged once from it.

There's nothing more pathetic then seeing someone who's obviously cheating and beating them anyway. To me cheaters are the saddest kind of people, because even if they win their still losers. There's no escaping it.
