I can understand hating some of it, because of the slash fiction and the Mary Sues, but overall I don't see why everyone is so anathema to it. Maybe because everyone thinks of it as only being slash fiction, which is a stereotype.
Also, does anyone know any good fanfiction? I'm too lazy to search for it...

Because the fanfic authors are fans for a reason. The original author is the best, and that inspires fans to try and emulate them. In 99% of cases, they fail.

because it's usually embarassingly bad involving sex between main characters and silly dialogue.

EDIT: It's kinda like the great yhatzee says about remakes and sequels, the orignial author tries they're darndest to live up to the original work instead of making it better and the fanfic authors piece stagnates and dies. but I'll give the guy who said he makes good stuff up above a try.

Agreed. Most of it is written by teenage girls swooning over some random character from some obscure anime no one has ever heard of (aside from others of their kind), with writing skills so intensely sub-par it makes my eyes bleed.

Actually http://halo.bungie.org/ has some good fanfiction for the Halo universe. And it doesn't suck. And halo fanfiction/fan speculation is enthralling because of all the crazy (and obvious coincidental [OR IS IT?]) connections between certain things and events in the universe. It's really cool :)

There'd probably be less hate for it if you didn't have to dig through 90 eye-gougingly bad Mary Sue slash fics to find a single good one.

It's a lot like the modern perception of rap. There is good rap music out there for those who are willing to look for it, but it usually gets buried beneath mountains of "E'RBODY IN DA CLUB GETTIN TIPSY."

All the bad becomes what people focus on. Its not that people hate fan fiction, people hate bad fan fiction leading all the bad stuff to get more focus. And Space Spoons is right, so much of it is crap.

Most of it is bad, completly out of character, yaoi, or a combination of the above. That's why most people hate it.

Like everything else, it's 90% crap. Fanfiction just doesn't have the filters to keep out its 90%.

Probably because most fanfiction is either full of laughable dialogue and scenarios, or is just someone's sexual fantasy that should've stayed in that person's mind/pants. There is some good fanfic out there (some of which even better than the actual stories they emulate), but as a general rule of thumb, it should be taken at face value: Stories written by people with little or no experience in proper writing.

Well I've got some compliments for my Oblivion story.
And I've started a Baldur's Gate story.

As for crappy fan-fiction: Some people might write bad fan fiction, but I think everyone who does write just has a story in their head. A story to tell. And that's something that I can understand. Sometimes people get a creative wave that just hits them. They get inspired for a story, or a song, or a drawing or something.
They may not have the ability to really flesh it out into something that people can enjoy or relate to, but they just want to create. And that, to me, is kind of admirable. It's easy to just day dream when you get the creative bug, but to follow through with some degree of finality? Regardless of how 'functional' it is? And then share it on the internet?
Yeah, 'admirable' is the word I'd use.

Mostly because it involves two characters whom have either A: Never talked to each other before, or, B: Only traded a few sentences with each other going up to each up and going "LET'S HAVE THE SEX RIGHT NOW!"

There is also the fact that 80% of the time is with be two male characters involved in said act.

But yeah, most of it is garbage and even the gems still have some leftover gunk on it from the heap of trash.

Because of the rather-justified stereotype that fanfic writers are yaoi fangirls. Also, it being the internet and all, the 90% of crap is especially plentiful and present.

Oh, and of course, a lot of people see the whole basing-your-work-on-someone-else's thing as bad.

I think it's a tad bit silly, why cant these people write origional material.

Regardless, I will be forever grateful to fan fiction for producing the greatest literary work in history, my immortal. [http://myimmortalrehost.webs.com]
Alright, despite my previous "eyes bleeding" comment, I did strive to read through this. It actually got the point where I was laughing so hard, I seriously couldn't keep going. Will probably try again some day, when I'm emotionally deadened enough to make it through. Heh.
