Why do people scream?

Scream people scream to let them know they are there. It's basically a defense mechanism. Screaming when you're in trouble let's others know that you're in trouble (durr).

I think it must have evolved as a noise that warns of danger and asks for assistance at the same time, without being confused with anything else. It's also a way of relieving pain (as is swearing, apparently).
Why people, especially young girls, do it all the fucking time is beyond me. Every so often I'll be at home, hear a scream and, naturally, be worried and rush to see what's up. Turn out it's some idiot children playing.

Yeah, I must say, people screaming is really distracting when you want to cut off their finger. I think we can all sympathise here.
Honestly, I don't know. Pain and shock makes you want to release alot of air and it happens to pass by your vocal chords? I have no clue, but what I do know is that if we didn't, no-one would know whether or not you've ran into a Tall, Dark and Handsome person in the alleyway who actually despite his looks, is not a nice person at all and has very strange requests for you to do, none of which will make you happy in the slightest. I don't even know if Pickles and whipped cream go together that well, but he thought it did!

OT: People scream because they are scared, in pain, surprised, need help or want people to stop posting stupid topics.
I thought this referring to rollercoasters, in which case how should I know?
It irritates me so much when you are going on a relatively fast, but not that bad ride and then 10 people wail as if they are being murdered. What the hell?
