I like the part where it says "The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Scott Steinberg."

By the way, what are we supposed to talk about?

Why they are not, and why people that believe so are, indeed, stupid.

The 'illegal to sell violent videogames to minors' thing has been active across the pond (UK, ireland and the rest of europe) for as long as there has been violence in videogames. Hasn't worked here either, I played GTA 1 (BBFC 18 rating, equivalent of ESRBs M) when i was 13 and neither i nor the company that sold it to me have served time or been responsible for the paying of the £5000 fine associated therein. No need to panic, it won't change a thing, trust me... I'm a gamer

For the same reason people keep opening topics on internet forums asking this question: People are too lazy to inform themselves properly.

Remember when they said Pokemon was bad and we were going to die from watching it?

It wasn't bad for me at all. But it sucks.

Christ, video games may very well have saved my life, WoW in particular. I have depression, when my dog died I was in a very bad place. My guild, with a bunch of incredible people in it, helped me get through a tough time. I'm not sure what would have happened without them, but I can guarantee that video games have helped me in ways that you can't imagine.

Admit it video games are evil, the bane of our existance and caused you to rob that liquor store, steal a car and then run down a protitue for her money.

Come on people can we not just learn to ignore all these morons in the news who think games are made by satin and trying to corrupt our youth.
I hope to god you're joking.

If not, then let me ask you this;
What are games for?
Are they there to damage people's brains?
Are they there to make the youth of today become serial killers?

No.
Games are entertainment. Just like books, movies, amusement parks, TV-shows and so forth. If it's so dangerous playing a violent game, why shouldn't it be equally dangerous to watch a violent movie or read a book containing violence?
And by the way, a theory I have based on my own experience, games with violence are great stress release. You play a game like, say, Fallout 3, blow some Super Mutant heads off and yay, you've had loads of fun and worked out some violence out of your system.

Of course a 10 year old shouldn't be playing games developed for 18 year olds. But that's almost MOSTLY a parental responsibility. If a game is rated that it's for 18 year old and up, then parent should consider if they should actually buy it for their 13 year old.

Also, games are freaking far away from being the 'source' of all stupid ideas. Because frankly, most young people who do really stupid shit have zero interest in video games, because they're to busy being rebellious by drinking, smoking, doing drugs and having sex.

"Researchers like David Thomas, who teaches critical video game theory at the University of Colorado, say the most curious misconception about the field is that games are strictly for juveniles. Such arguments -- the impetus for countless political battles -- ignore the fact that the average player is 35 years old, and more adult women play than teenage boys, according to the Entertainment Software Association."

Those last two parts surprised me.

Uh...yeah, I think that was some pretty obvious sarcasm coming from MaxPowers.

Anyways, (old) people are against video games for the same reasons old people were against rock & roll fifty years ago. It's new, it's different, they don't understand it, so instead of doing research they whine about the youth of today being nothing like their own generation.

That, and it makes one hell of a scapegoat.

Good point overall, but it's irrelevant in this case, because it was a rhetorical question.
