I've been wondering over the past few days. It came across to me while playing Uncharted 2. I started to try and answer that question by myself and had me stumped. Do we fight for the thrill and excitement , or is it a question of honour or mentality for others. It could just simply boil down to human nature, back when we were primitive people and would settle disputes with clenched fist.
I would like to know what conclusion you lot can come to.

Its human nature.

Thousands of years of evolution have burned into our brains a "fight or die" instinct.

Because you always think the guy next to you got more ice cream and you don't think its fair, so you bomb him.

"Mankind has been trying to kill eachother off since the beginning of time... Now, we finally have the power to finish the job." - The Comedian

I say its just human nature. Not that it's a good thing, but thats my opinion of why we fight.

Well the strong live and the weak die do they not? How do you get stronger? You fight. Were naturally aggressive, it's just been over the past could thousand years that we've attempted not to be(and failing by the way.)

Violence, the desire to fight, and the desire for supremacy are all inherent in human nature.

We humans are primitive people who cant take insults well. So we have fight and call others names to make ourselves feel better

from a male perspective: we fight because we're born to be killers. Our ancestors hunted. To mate you had to be a survivor, to survive you had to be strong or smart.

So the instinct is in all men to fight and kill. Modern society provides few outlets for these feelings and urges, so people fight.

Of course you do get people fighting for religious reasons and nutters, but the vast majority of fighting, which occurs on a friday night down the boozer is just a combination of primal urges and inebriation

Not to question on your answer, but what when I thought it was human nature. Surely not all, but some people can just tune out that instinct like greed. Sure that's not enough to say it isn't human nature, but I don't think it's the true answer if you excuse me

Well, thats one of those simple questions that does not have a simple answer. Sometimes we fight to stop violence, much to the irony, sometimes we fight for justice and honor, sometimes for god ,and sometimes, we just want something to fight. There really is no single reason that can be nailed down, but one thing can be said, as long as there are humans, there will be war, and war never changes.

Because the power of the ego paired with weak self control makes for a violent world. We're worse than almost all of the other animals because we are one of the two animals that kill when there is relatively little to gain.

Like the OP said, human nature. Way back in the day of caves and fire, a man had to fight to kill the mammoth to feed his family. This helped develop the fight or flight system, which can spur people to fight when they normally wouldn't. Also, way back when, the biggest/strongest/most agressive generally were the ones that survived, and got to reproduce. And anger.
simple as that.

Mostly its human nature; others argue, or fight, because they like it.

Now if its two people who I'm rpetty close to having a big personal arguement I get kinda shakey and literally put myself in the middle to stop it from escalating, like I used to with my parents. I'd do the same with physical fights too, although that never happened with my parents.. much.

Aaaaanyway I find general arguements, and discussions, kinda fun. Especially if I'm involved but I always hate physical fighting. Mainly because I would probably suck at it.

So the majority is saying that fighting...is programmed into ours lives from the day we are born. That most of us find a way to turn it off, but certain things (be it religious or other people or certain circumstances) can trigger it off or in other words switch it back on.

Why do men fight? There can be any number of reasons, personal gain, patriotism, because someone said so, or any other reason. But why do human beings fight? Because we can't not. Deep down within us we are all greedy and manical. We inherently reject authority because we dislike that society doesn't accomodate us personally. We fight because there's a world out there, and it's just unfortunate enough to be in our way.
