Whenever we buy something there is reason why we have chosen to do it, When it comes to video games what makes you choose that certain game?
Its it because you've seen the trailers, heard from a friend, seen someone play videos on it or maybe you bought their previous game and want to get the new one...
Either way tell us in the comments what game you bought and why you bought it.
Mostly because I want to play it and judge for myself.
And pretty much that's it. Trailers are a fool's gauge of a game, as they can be massively misrepresented. Friends/critics are equally unreliable because of opinions being subjective, though they at least carry a tiny bit of weight in that they've actually played the game (one hopes). Previous game being good does not always equal sequel being good, or vice versa, but it's usually a good enough reason to check it out.
These all lead to interest in a game, but do any actually make me go out an buy it? No.
Well when I was younger there was nothing I wanted to do more than pretend to be a purple and yellow dragon charging around and breathing fire on things... well... other than being said dragon xD
Then it became general escapism from reality to take my mind off of the family situation I was growing up in.
Now I buy games to fend off the inevitable suicide due to my depression >.> One day I will likely just stop logging into any of my Comando96 accounts on various sites and they'll likely mean I'm red splatter under a train.
The games I like mostly are not those which require "skill" per se but require more intelligent thinking in order to win over the game.
The battlefield series therefore for shooters. Being able to shoot is skill, while thinking of flanking and outmaneuvering can provide a killer advantage.
Total War series because... your running an Empire and get to smash people together xD If your smart you excel.
Assassins Creed as thinking allows multiple methods to problems, some severely better than others... still requires some skill. Or luck... in multiplayer xD
Fallout series and I just got into the elder scrolls (I will complete oblivion before I buy skyrim). There is some... "skill" to it, but mostly so long as your not a dumb shit about it, you can maximize any situation and not walk into obvious pitfalls (or at least I dodge them).
Mount and Blade... which is fucking awesome as its just a 1st (or 3rd) person Total War game. Which era? Medieval... though there are mods for whatever era you want xD
I also do like some TF2, as though it requires skill I do have that skill... so long as it doesn't result in a hand guns fire fight because I'll be the loser 80% of the time. Good with a minigun though. TF2 is another where thought can win you the match.
Friends are equally unreliable because of opinions being subjective, though they at least carry a tiny bit of weight in that they've actually played the game (one hopes).
Although opinions are indeed subjective, doesn't the reliability of these depend on how similar your opinions generally are? I mean sure, they're still somewhat unreliable, but comparing peer opinion to trailers kind of sounds illogical. Trailers tell absolutely nothing and will more often than not show misleading content.
I find the opinions of some of the people I know to be very reliable (personally), as they've never introduced me to games I didn't end up enjoying. That might be just me, though.
I buy current games because they interest me. Sometimes it's because I'm a fan of the series or, subject matter and other times because the OP looks really interesting. As for classic games, I grab games I either loved as a kid that were lost to time or, I grab games I wanted when I was a kid. As for games in the other piles, I'll grab Atari games to see what gaming was like before I came around. I'm grabbing PS2 and Gamecube games now because I chose Xbox back when I had the choice. Same with the generation before that: I had a Super Nintendo so I need to get in touch with the blast processing games I've missed in years long past.
Because I like to be immersed in new worlds or hear the games music. Sometimes I also buy it just because I'm a fan of a character or the series in general. For example, I'm tempted to buy London Games 2012 on the Wii just because Daisy's in it. But I digress, my university life would be quite boring without video games. I can't imagine my high school life without Battlefield 2 and Serious Sam going on at some point.
Which is why I bought Battlefield 3 and Serious Sam 3: BFE. Had a major point of my life go hand-in-hand with the games that came before them.
Buying legit because I've joined the ranks of the honest fools and the game industry wouldn't exist without us. Someone has to do it.
Before as a kid I used to pirate the hell out of everything and put it on my dad's machine. That's how most of us started gaming. Kids have no money afteral, but gamer kids were smart back then, so it didn't stop us.
Because my life is bland and monotonous and the single, near-insignificant speck of glee to be found is the realization that, when I shoot someone on the face in Battlefield 3, someone somewhere is slightly annoyed, and I take solace in this fact.
