Why do you care what people think?

Anyone who blogs or uses internet forums on a regular basis is not going to like what I'm going to say. I don't mean to be offensive or anger or flame or anything like that, but I'm curious to know what it is that makes everyone who uses forums etc. think that anyone actually cares about their opinion.

Ok let me clarify. I'm an open minded guy and I like a good discussion or debate, who doesn't? But what I don't get is why people think that their opinions are SO important that it's all they do. Do you really care that much about how people perceive you? i.e. as in, do you give your opinions just to throw in your 2 cents or is it all just to satisfy your ego?

I go on forums because I enjoy giving my two cents. The world is a huge place, not everyone is going to agree with me. It's just when their argument is clearly wrong that I stop caring what they think of me.

Why do you care what people think?

So when I'm on this site I can tell the smart users from the stupid users! :D

Also I can figure out why some users have a tendancy to agree with eachother in a lot of different forums.

We call those people... fags! XD

Why do I care about what other people think?
Because its the other people that make me who I am.

I like reading other peoples opinions, out of curiosity. It's not so hard to believe people would read mine for the same reason. However that's only on pre existing topics in forums. I wouldn't expect people to read my blog if I had one.

We all crave attention, in some form or another. Though I do have a few other theories.

1) Basic bigotry. Yes, we all have it. The 'I'm right, and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong.' Not that we have it all the time, mind you, but each of us has a distinct subject that we hold dear, and that we don't want others to disagree with us on.

2) Human interaction. To start a discussion, only to have everyone say "I agree" is, for the most part, boring. Everyone agrees, we can all go our separate ways, its over. Someone has to voice an opinion that sends everyone in a fervor, even if they don't agree in the least with it (generally, trolling).

3) Trolling. I mentioned it before, but this time, it is intentional. It is to be the antagonist, to be the 'rebel' and what not.

4) I can't think of a 4 right now. I'm supposed to be writing an essay. Can anyone else think of a 4?

I don't repeat my opinion because I care about what people think.

I usually have to repeat my opinion in certain threads because it's like forumites don't even read what was written before, and then act shocked when someone else says the same damn thing I said two pages ago. And states soemthing that isn't fact as fact. I can't stand that.

Either READ/SKIM the thread as much as possible (I know, I know, some threads are nigh impossible to get through walls of text), or don't get mad when someone says what I said a page ago. Man, how hard is it to read? You're on a freakin' forum FFS.

I blog for my own purposes - mostly to see how much of a ruckus I can cause with people wandering onto my blog, or for my friends to tell them how I'm doing, or to record something for my own future memoirs. Doesn't bug me that you made this topic, really.

Very true.

This is all interesting stuff. I just like to sit back and read forums, see what people are like. It's been a long time since I've been on forums, not really sure why. But I sort of browse around all forums that interest me. This website seems to have a decent number of similarly intelligent people. That's why I thought I'd settle in here for a bit.

I don't post that much, but I always read threads that interest me.

I think you've hit the nail on the head when it comes to the Escapist forums. Compared to a lot of other fanboy-infested gaming websites, the Escapist hosts people who are in the awkward middle ground between blogging and not blogging. There's a slew of threads that are simply one question followed by dozens, even hundreds of answers.

I like the communal input on a subject, sometimes I get a giggle from a funny post or learn something. I also like the zombie apocalypse threads, it's a really interesting topic.

this is the only forum I use at the moment because I feel that the escapist is one of few sites that has a forum untainted by the vast stupidity on the internet.
