I have been playing World of Warcraft for a few months, and one thing I have noticed is whenever I mention the fact that I play for the Alliance people scoff, roll their eyes at me, or made rude comments. Maybe it's because I have only been playing since last August, but I don't understand where all of these anti-Alliance feelings are coming from. So please clear the air for me.

Why are you anti-Alliance or Anti-Horde?

Yes, why not both?

OT: I don't play WoW, but I think it's because people have a pretty strong desire to belong to a group/society and the way I understand it is that for a lot of people WoW is like a second life. With that comes contempt for the other group / the enemy. I think this is called ingroup/outgroup behavior or something.

I've never understood it either.
I played WoW for a while, and I played on the Alliance side. I never got harrassed for doing so though.

I don't. I have characters on both sides, it's annoying when people profess their hate when I mention it in-game.

On the servers I was on, Alliance was full of noobs and kids with a few great guilds, and Horde was full of good players who were complete asshats and griefers.

I have a level 85 on both, so I don't favour either. I picked one on both for the different experience/perspective on the game, and the races. I love being a Gnome Rogue for example, and I can't imagine having any race other than Undead for my Priest.

In general, I'd say the Alliance are seen as the "good guys", and people hate them for it because being bad is cool. I like it when people express those feelings though, people seem to think the Alliance suck, we don't. In fact, there is such little PvE progression on my realm that people are practically forced into PvP. It's quite fun smashing the shit out of them in world PvP, having them make alts just for me and linking Vial of Tears [http://www.wowhead.com/item=32727] to them.

Only twelve year olds play Alliance.

Unless you witness Horde trade chat, then you realize that only people 12-20 play Horde, everyone else goes Ally.

I hate (insert the name of the faction I'm not currently playing,) because it seems all they do on my server is troll the (insert the name of the faction I'm currently playing.)

Seriously, it seems like player courtesy goes out the window when dealing with the other faction, even in a pvp setting. That's to be expected, I guess.

EDIT: Previously, Alliance got hate because players there tended to be more immature. That's evened out a bit in the past years.

Night elf hunters/rogues are ALWAYS 12 years old. Just so you know.

But what the fuck do I know, when I played the max level was 60. Alterac Valley was the shit back then.

Nowadays you can play on both sides. so the real big problems arent there anymore.

It has a lot to do with the fact that people will run into jerks from the other faction who try to kill them when they're at some disadvantage due to class or circumstance or number or power. Then they themselves will kill members of the opposing faction based on these things and the whole cycle continues. The justifications are idiotic. I always tried to be civil while I was playing and ate dead quite a lot for it but I never stopped helping out a horde overwhelmed or giving a courteous nod to the guy who got to a node first. And I caught a lot of lumps for never attacking first. A warrior is a really tempting target for a lot of people. At least they were then. There was only a short window when charge and intercept broke slows and snares where justice was consistently meted out by me to every aggressor.

I play on a PvP server as horde and groups of alliance tend to go out of their way to kill me and camp my corpse when I'm questing, so i tend not to like the alliance, however there are horde that do that to, but i think the most basic answer is that it's the point of the game, there are two sides who have been at war ever since the orcs first entered the world it's fun to hate each other

Edit: I actually play alliance (thats where my 85 is) however before that i was always horde

I assumed that people rolls their eyes at the Alliance because it's a fantasy game, there isnt much of a reason someone plays it just to be a Human, compared to the Horde, the latter is more monsterous yet has their own nobelness.....then again, people hates Blood Elves for being effeminate...besides the Alliance has Elves, Horde players hates BElves beause its sort of like a guy listening to rap music, getting the lingo wrong, looking like a poser.

Personally out of both factions, i hate Tauren, Blood Elves, Draenei and Dwarves...

Tauren are annoying, have you seen how many Shamen kills you in Battlegrounds? Blood Elves are annoying ebcause they constantly use silence to ruin us mages...Draenei has hot voices, but their Sizes makes it annoying when trying to access small doorways even on small mounts like mechanostriders.

Not sure why i hate Dwarves, guess they're the 2nd alliance race i listed just to balance out the hate.

Like the looks of Gnomes, Nelfs and Trolls though. :D

Play as a Human Mage though....so you probally know the reason behind the whole shamen, belf and rogue hate..we're just too flimsy against practically everyone.

EDIT: Like the looks of Goblins too, they're basically cooler Gnomes. :D

I hate gnomes, dwarfs and goblins, because the short races are just awkward. My guild (alliance) Liked to joke that gnomes are only good for kicking

If you remember levelling in Stranglethorn Vale on a pvp server then you remember why it was so easy to hate the other faction. On PvE servers there's no real reason to hate anyone bar the forum trolls.

For the love of God, don't say that on the WoW forums. You'd cause such a huge explosion of rage that the forums might go down.

I play as alliance and I definitely don't hate the horde, I find it a bit silly to hate an entire faction, yes I know that they're at war in-game but unless you are on an RP server it just seems ridiculous to me. In the past Alliance were seen to be the more immature faction though, so that could be a reason.

That said, I dislike playing as horde, as the population on my server is smaller.

Also, I play a night elf rogue, I'm not 12, have you seen the way shadowmeld works now? Extra vanish? yes please.

I hate the fact that they despise each other to the point where I can't even send mail to someone on the opposite side. I can't even use the goblin auction houses easily, because you can't bid on your own items.

Other than that, I laugh at the idea of hating one side or the other...at least by WoW game standards. As far as the story goes, I guess I can see some rationale, but the idea of hating all the players on one side or the other just strikes me as idiotic.

If forced to take sides, I'll usually side with Alliance, but only because anti-Alliance sentiment seems more widespread and obnoxious.

When I played I preferred Alliance, although I had characters on both sides.

The entire 'For the Horde' chest-thumping just got on my nerves more often than not, and being a fan of the original games story, I found it hard to play a character which timeline-wise would have been murdering children around 20 years ago if I still remember the times right.

Then again I'm one of the tiny minority that remember Warcraft 1 and 2. Warcraft was one of the games which got me into PC gaming so very many years ago and, along with Age of Empires, created a love of strategy games that persists to this day.
