I was born and lived in Japan for about 3 years until I moved to California. My dad is a programmer, and the Silicon Valley is a hotspot for software developers. Since the Silicon Valley has a better job market, we moved here.
One of the best things about California is the weather. It gets so hot and humid during summer in Japan, and fairly cold during the winter. In California, we get at least 300 days of sunshine. There's also a great variety of food that many other places in the U.S. don't have (Mexican, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, et cetera). You could argue that marijuana usage is more relaxed here, but I guess that depends from person to person (personally, I don't think weed is THAT great).
Some of the cons are the smog issues and high taxes. California has an unfortunate geographical location where it's affected by China's pollution. Don't believe me? Here's my sauce: http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2010/12/01/california-pollution-made-in-china/
High taxes are just the nature of a liberal state, I suppose. I am not a politician or economic expert by any means, so that's just my amateur speculation. Oh, and gun laws. Though I don't see why this is a huge issue, as stun guns are generally known to be more effective than firearms.
Just like any other state, California has its pros and cons. Why do people (outside of California and moved into California) insist that California is a horrible place to live?
On a side note, I'm going to North Carolina State University to get my bachelor's degree in computer science. I'm going to travel across America as the only states have visited were Nevada (Reno) and Hawai'i (Honolulu). I may live in the RTP area after I graduate, but we'll see.
On another side note, this new Captcha feature is a PITA.
