Why does the x-box typing system fail to impress?

So, I was sitting there, bored stiff, and had a PC-compatible Xbox 360 controller and a copy of autohot key, so I was like "lolz, let's use it as a keyboard".

So, long story short, I've typed only a couple paragraphs (of nonsense - bits and pieces of text I found strewn about the room) and I can already type at speeds comparable to how fast experienced X-box entry technicians (to use high language to describe low professions) seem to do it on the current system (5-7 wpm, I'd guess).
Which surprised me, to say the least.

So, I suppose, the discussion is: why do console text input systems suck so much?

EDIT: I can provide the script if you guys want.

...because you're using the thumbsticks to enter keys?
Making it a much more difficult version of "hunt and peck"

A wheel select system is much better, and has been used to great effect in some console games, but they decided to emulate a keyboard like dumb asses. It just doesn't work with an anolouge stick.

I had a sidekick as my first phone, so I can type ridiculously fast with the xbox controller keyboard add on.
